Jubei69 Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 Need help choosing between this I have a 09 Sierra 5.3L Extended Cab Texas Edition that has lots of Chrome, I would like to go with Chrome Nerf Bars, but I do like the durability of Stainless Steel. Isn't there one of these bars that is Chromed over 304 Stainless Steel?
dlstewart01 Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I have the platinum series on my 05. They are chromed stainless steel and have a life time warranty. In my experience the chromed steel bars will only last the length of the warranty and rust out. usually from the inside. I have had this happen.
High Plains Drifter Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I have the ICI bars and they are stainless but so polished they look like chrome, very pleased with them. Westin makes nice bars, whatever you choose will look good.
Stex Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 I tried to order some chrome over stainless round Westins last summer and was told they do not make such anymore. Tried to find other makes but could not...have not checked recently. I hear the plain stainless dull and require buffing. Maybe High Plains can comment on such?
LAGA Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 I have black Westin Platinum Series. I had a problem with my first set peeling, but one phone call and I got a replacement set in a couple of days. Westin makes a good product and has great customer service.
BigBlueLB756 Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 www.autoanything.com has the Westin Platinum Series nerf bars for a 2009 GMC ext cab truck for $427.95 less a 10% discount and FREE shipping which would be $385.16. Chrome-plated 304 stainless steel with a lifetime warranty. Says they can ship Monday or Tuesday. Westin part no. 26-1680.
asleep83 Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 If you live in the salt belt I would suggest you go with 304 high polished steps without a chrome coating, as the salt will cause the chrome to pit over time. Well Westin does offer a lifetime warranty, having to change them because the chrome is pitting is a pain. Have a look at Steelcraft http://www.steelcraftautomotive.com/ as they do premium polished steps with stainless brackets and hardware. If your going to go stainless, you might as well go all the way.
dlstewart01 Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Polished stainless will not always match other chrome parts. It has a yellow tint to it or will appear slightly dull.
Stex Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 *ssmodder is right on...they did not have these last summer...something about moving the plant to Mex and were shut down??? anyway the chrome over stainless appears the best way to go... http://www.autoanything.com/nerf-bars/61A1...A0A3110629.aspx

I agree I dealt directly with Westin on the set I had for my 2000 and their customer service was very good. I emailed them photos and the info and got an immediate response. They had the 3 yr warranty (cheaper ones) and after 2 yrs were rusting pretty bad. They sent me a brand new set out. I ended up buying their black aluminum bars that are open. The rounded bars in the front and back collected snow and debris pretty bad.

HapHazard Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I have the Westin signature series I believe. The shop owner selling (and ordering) them told me that platinum series wasn't necessary in CA climate conditions, which may be true as well for you in Texas.
