"GM and Ford have announced sales incentives aimed at luring owners of Toyota vehicles. Ford plans to offer $1,000 rebates to Toyota and Honda Motor Co. customers, and GM will offer no- interest loans of as long as 60 months for purchases of one of its new models with a Toyota trade-in."

The only thing I wonder about all of this is, what happens with all the Toyotas that wind up being dumped onto GM and Ford dealers' used car lots? They're nothing but worthless junk, and will be in need of recall work being performed. Not to mention that given the reputation Toyota will have by the end of this, nobody will buy them and those dealers will be stuck with cars they can't sell.

On the other hand, it does possibly mean that when Toyota-loyal consumers visit GM and Ford lots to look at used Toyotas, those dealers can try to steer them toward domestic products instead.....

I dont think loyal toyota owners are going to go crazy over this. Only if youre one of the ones that has had a problem with the accelerator sticking. Toyota will send a fix and then they will bring their car in and continue on. Although I agree the suspension of sales will hurt their potential new comers.

Do you have to trade in a Toyota to get the rebate or just own one?

I was told by a dealer its either this rebate or the GM loyalty rebate, not both.

Interesting to see how much trade in value would GM offer to existing Toyota owners for their rides on top of the $1000 rebate & 0% financing (up to 60 months) incentatives. This could backfire on GM as they would have alot of used Toyotas on their lots.

They would have a lot of used Toyotas that have the highest resale of used vehicles. I don't think the resale will be immediately affected by this. GM sells some new cars and improves the used car lot at the same time.
