How Can I Tell Which Size Axel I Have

I am getting ready to do some major maintenance on my truck, and I am ordering some amsoil here and need to know how much to buy. The service manual for my truck says it has the following capacities:

 

Axle Capacities

 

 

• Front Drive Axle (8.25")
  

1.43 liters

 

1.51 quarts

 

 

• Front Drive Axle (9.25")
  

1.73 liters

 

1.83 quarts

 

 

• Rear Drive Axle (8.6")
  

2.03 liters

 

2.15 quarts

 

 

• Rear Drive Axle (9.5")
  

2.6 liters

 

2.75 quarts

 

 

• Rear Drive Axle (9.75")
  

2.84 liters

 

3.00 quarts

 

 

• Rear Drive Axle (10.5")
  

2.6 liters

 

2.75 quarts

 

 

• Rear Drive Axle (11.5")
  

3.0 liters

 

3.17 quarts

 

 

 

The questions is, how can I tell what size axel I have?? Do I just measure the diff cover from bottom to top??

If it's for the truck in your profile you have the 8.25" front axle and the 8.6 rear axle. I just did both today and it took about 4.5 quarts total.

Yes, it's for my 04 silverado 1500.

 

Awesome, so accorrding to the service manual, I should need:

 

 

• Front Drive Axle (8.25")

   

1.51 quarts

 

And:

 

 

• Rear Drive Axle (8.6")

   

2.15 quarts

 

For a total of: 3.66qts??

 

Also, just to clarify I should use 80w-90 in the front and 75w-90 in the rear correct? Thank you very much for your help.

Mine was closer to 2 quarts for the front and 2.5 quarts for the rear.

 

Yep you can use 80w90 in the front and 75w90 in the rear. I used 75w90 in the front and rear. The amsoil severe gear 75w90 is top shelf stuff.

Awesome, yeah I planned on getting the severe gear 75w90 for the rear, and the regular synthetic 80w-90 for the front as they dont seem to sell a sever gear 80w-90.

I plan on replacing the filter and fluids, will I need the full 11.2qts for this?? If not, where are the other 6.2qts the service manual calls for w/just the pan removal.

no, you don't need 11.2 Qts. that other 6.2 Quarts is in the Torque Converter, as it is always at least half full of ATF at all times. when you start the engine, the Transmission pump fills the Converter the rest of the way, which is why the dipstick seems to read overfull with the engine not running and cold.. (and this is why EVERYBODY recommends checking the ATF with the engine/trans fully warmed up and at idle.)
