Gm Extended Warranty/protection Plan

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, so my warranty is due to run out soon on my 2008 Sierra as I currently have almost 30,000 miles on it and I received an offer in the mail concerning the GM Protection Plan trying to sell me an extended warranty. I've never been one to buy extended warranties on my past vehicles and fortunately never had any trouble anyways before I sold or traded. I plan on keeping this truck for awhile due to the current economy situation and just wanted others thoughts on the plan. The offer is 4 years/60,000 miles for $2,615.

I would. It will pay itself back big time if you have to replace the weak lifters.
if that would be his biggest concern, he's still covered for that for another 70,000 miles under the standard Powertrain warranty.

GM extended warranty is way too expensive. I remember when I had the Tundra. They offered me 7 yr/100k with no deductible bumper to bumper for $1100. How does GM charge some $2600 bucks for that extended warranty. I don't keep my truck long enough to spend that kind of money.

Simple economics. Toyota (historically, anyway :sigh: ) has not needed to collect as much to cover problems to fix.

Realize that for $2600 you would only be getting a short term warranty extention....you were covered for 36,000 so you will only get another 24,000 miles....your three year warranty get an extra year.

So, you would be paying $2600 for ONE year and 24,000 miles.....not a good deal at all.....

I have never bought an extended warranty, and, yes, I had to pay for a few repairs, but I am way ahead. Don't forget you have a 5 yr 100,000 miles power train warranty.

You could fix a few air conditioners and several radios for $2600...ugh!!!!

Not true:

When does a GM Protection Plan begin?

The term and mileage of coverage is calculated from the date of contract purchase and the current odometer mileage on the vehicle. There are two forms of pricing available: New and Used. "New" consists of any vehicle that has been in service up to 12 months AND up to 12,000 miles on the odometer. "Used" is any vehicle that has been in service for more than 12 months OR more than 12,000 miles on the odometer.

Not so sure....this is from the site noted:

"Time and Mileage

Vehicle service and maintenance contracts cover a specific amount of time and mileage. Generally, a customer will be able to select from a number of time and mileage options. The time is the "term" and is referred to in months or years. The contract will be in effect until either time or mileage is reached. "

I read this as a 4 yr 60k plan terminates at 4 yrs or 60k miles from date of vehicle purchase, not policy purchase.

I bought the GMPP with my truck, I used to work at a dealership, GMPP was our second biggest customer...

The nice thing about the offer I was given is that they return all of the money at the end of the warranty period if I don't make a claim. This way if some small things break, I can just pay them out of pocket, but if I run into some big ticket items, AC, fuel pump, etc, the warranty will be there. Either way I'll at least get my money's worth

I agree with you, except these aren't really "GM" and "Toyota" warranties... they're issued by separate companies (maybe under the same big umbrella(?), but separate). They each run their numbers and come up with a rate. It's actually a bit odd. Repairs on the new Tundra can be *very* expensive, yet the extra warranty sounds pretty cheap... so it looks like a good deal to me (i.e., I think they underestimated their future cost). GM parts and repairs are (relatively) inexpensive, yet the extra warranty is too high... so it's not a good deal IMHO.

I live by a simple rule. If I can afford to fix or replace it without losing sleep, then I don't insure it. If I honestly believed that I would be spending $3k on repairs over the next few years, I'd probably trade the truck now... actually, I would have never bought it. Based on past experience, I really don't plan to be spending much of anything. My 99 Sierra never saw the shop.

According to my case histories when I had to give out GMPP Major Guards out, I would have to calculate the most appropriate option based on the in service date (new vehicle purchase) or the date in which I offered it to the customer, if it was a used vehicle and not already carry the CPO (Cadillac/Hummer/SAAB). You are correct up to a certain degree. General Motors would not extend any warranty (CPO/CUV/GMPP) past 100,000 miles if they could help it. If they could not, then they would try to make sure to get as close to 100,000 miles on the mileage part of it. Separate of that, GM did not want to carry a warranty term wise for more than 7 years. The 7 year warranty was based on the old Cadillac Allante warranty that was 7 year/100,000 mile warranty. GM's position with the majority of its customers was to use the In Service Date (Purchase Date) most of the time but there was the other method as well. I guess the best way to find out if it meets the OP's needs is to call GMPP @ 1888-881-4990 and ask them to see what they would use: Purchase Date of the policy or the In Service Date.

A few years ago when I bought my 04 I decided to buy the GMPP. I got a quote online that was much cheaper than what I originally had gotten from my dealer. After I presented this deal to my dealer they were able to match it. (I guess a little profit is better than none at all) Anyway if you don't live in PA you don't pay sales tax either. Might be worth checking it out. You can get a quote by automated email (at least that is how they did it a few years back)

Also I got the balance of my warranty back when I traded the truck in 07 even though I used the warranty. If you do decide to do an extended warranty, I'd say stay with GMPP. There are others out there, but there's absolutely no hassle using it at any GM dealer.

Good luck

Extended warranties are only a good deal if you are poor & can't afford repairs. You get to be a poor person who can't afford repairs by doing stupid things like buying high profit extended warranties.

^ :sigh: ..... Remember my friend..... we are driving GM products! LOL. Anyways.. I got this quote for shits and giggles as my 3/36 is almost out: (BTW, I'm far from poor)

If anyone want more info let me know, but it is clearly stated that both term and mileage is "add-on"

My 07 is almost out of the 3/36 new car warranty. I know that my drivetrain

is covered for 5/100 but the drivetrain is not what I am worried about !!!!!!!

I worry about the rusted /leaking tranny lines because of those cheap POS

connectors GM uses, snapping exaust manifold bolts,

the $1200 heater core replacement, the $1000 fuel pump replacement and or

AC system issues that are like a RASH on all of the GM truck forums and other

electrical dodads that the powertrain warranty won't cover !

I plow snow and heavy tow and I usually dump these trucks every 3 years

so I never worry about out of pocket repairs except for a $19.95 OIL CHANGE !

Anyhoo the economy and business sucks and if I bought a new truck I would

have to buy a new $6000 snow plow also as my current one is 10 years old and

gettin worn out and I don't wanna spend the cash or have my old one swapped

to a new truck to the tune of $1500 bucks.......................

So I am checking out a GMPP policy for piece of mind !!!!!!!!!

Black Cadillac sells discounted GMPP plans and a GMPP Major Guard 0 deduct.

3 yrs/30 k miles is around $1000 .... GM class D-4.....(plus $250 for snowplowing).

This starts the day I purchase it for another 30 months and 30k addl. miles on top

of the 28k miles my truck already has on it. All according to the sales rep. I spoke

with along with what I have read..................

Heres a note from price table C for a vehicle in the D-4 class with 24,001 to 36k miles:

*Note: Coverage Starts on Todays Date & Current Odometer Readings, NOT on "Original In-Service Date.

This will be the FIRST extended warranty I have ever bought only because this

truck is worked HARD and not a driveway queen grocery getter !!!!!!!!!!!

That's who I bought mine from back at Christmas while they had a $100 off special going on. I looked all over and couldn't find a better deal. Even tried working with my local dealer but best he could do was like $300 more than Black Caddy plus I'd had to pay tax on the sale.
