Muffler.....

Just sitting here thinking about the $100 I am about to drop on a magnaflow muffler. I was wondering what if I just get the trust saw out and cut the muffler out and replace with a straight pipe.

 

What do you guys think about this? Go ahead and grill me!

I did it. Minus the new pipe part. The exhaust basically just dumps under the cab. It's insanely loud, but it doesn't sound terrible. I'll weld in that pipe one of these days...

Besides it being illegal in some states, you will actually loose torque or HP due to the lack of backpressure. It will have a nice growl to it though.

I did that on my '93. The exhaust shop removed the muffler and put in a straight pipe (heck, it was their idea). It sounded sweet but after awhile I noticed spark knock on light accelerations. To this day I don't know if the lack of back pressure caused the spark not or not but seemed to happen after the muffler was removed. I personally will not do that again.

Are you sure about that? (I was never pulled over for the noise but I guess they could if they wanted) The motorcycles around here are obnoxious in the summer time.

It's illegal here in Illinois too. I haven't noticed any difference in power or overall gas mileage. Still churning out the same 9.0xx that I always get when I'm real easy on the skinny pedal.

It's actually not legal in Michigan to run without a muffler, and even with some mufflers it is still illegal. By law, a passenger vehicle exhaust cannot exceed so many decibels. I know this because my friend in high school ran his 1990 Silverado with the old 5.7L on true dual straight pipes. Long story short we crested a hill on a country road one day at the same time a cop did. Of course the pipes where wide open, the cop whipped a U-turn and had us pulled over within a quarter mile. Gave my buddy a fix-it ticket and said he had 2 weeks to bring the truck back into the police post. He brought it in and the cop placed a decibel reader 2 feet from one of his exhaust tips to register the level. He had since put on some cheapo mufflers (which he had cut back off that same afternoon) and passed the DB test.

 

That being said, this is the first vehicle I have ever owned that I actually put a muffler on. Everyone else has had straight pipes (keeping the cats of course). Almost everyone where I grew up runs straight pipes because lets be honest, it sounds flippin' sweet.

 

I get so sick of people dogging the "you're going to be losing all your low end torque" BS. I've argued this point before and I'll try it one more time. Stock pipes are 2.75" in diameter without mandrel bends, throw in a 2 foot pipe to replace the muffler and you're done. For comparison lets look at a magnaflow single side system that consists of 3" diameter pipes, a STRAIGHT THROUGH muffler, and mandrel bends. Which system do you think will have less back-pressure and consequently the ill perceived loss of low end torque?

 

Now can you over do it with a 3.5" or 4" straight pipe and lose all the scavenging effect? Sure, but there is NO harm in running the stock exhaust with a pipe welded in place of the original muffler. It's going to be louder in the cab, but if it's ever too loud, you can always fall back on your original Magnaflow plan and you're only out $20-30 for the straight pipe attempt.

Any Noise ordinances in your town or surrounding area??? I have a 1979 Hurst/Olds... It has A OE exhaust system (all pieces have GM stampings)..... If X cop is on duty in my town when I take it out, he seems to always write me a ticket for the noise ordinance...... Pisses me off I end up in court every time with the SAME receipt for the exhaust from the dealer ship, I bought the exhaust from (plus the parts page from the GM Parts Catalog). It is quite loud but BONE stock. Stock exhaust is exempt from the noise ordinances, I cost me about 300 bucks to learn it from a lawyer. After I got the first ticket..

 

Plus you do not want your neighbors evil eyeing you every time the see you drive by.

 

But nothing sounds better than straight pipes..

I live in Michigan and guy that did my exhuast said it was legal. i wanted a flowmaster muffler, but he told me was cheaper and sounded just as good with no muffler and dual pipes. I drive by cops who sit and run radar and hit the gas to see if they will pull me over, but they never do... I have a buddy with 2.3L Ranger with no muffler and straight pipe. He gets pulled over all the time for it being loud, but cops just check for a cat and tailpipe and let him go.

neighbors! Dont get me started on my inbreed hillbilly neighbor and his 90 firebird that he says has a built 350, that is really nothing more than a 305 with 350 heads he got from the scrap yard, and it still doesnt run right, if at all. In fact the other day I had to help in push it back in the garage! he is always making some got awful noise with that rust bucket! So me making a little noise with my truck will be just fine.

Well I wonder why the cops dont pull me over and ticket me then. Muffler not going back on, lol.
