Best Way To Deal With Rust

You can try to use rust treatment solvents, rust dissolvers, or those products that turn rust 'inert', but none of them are really fool-proof. If you have the time and resources, they best way is with a wire brush tool (one that mounts onto an air tool will save you tons of time) or with a sand blaster. Sand paper works too. Sand/blast until all of the rust is gone, clean with a solvent like wax/grease remover and a rag, and repaint.

I'm sure there may be other options out there, but this is just what works best for me

There was a previous thread on here concerning the same problem.

On my 08 Silverado, I too was seeing some rust where the factory frame protection had worn/scraped off.

At the recommendation of someone here, I purchased a couple of cans of Daubert no-rust spray, which is apparently what they use at the factory, but in an aerosol form.

I prepped the frame (washed, dried, brushed) and sprayed the Daubert on...looks great and is holding up extremely well this far.

Rust proofing will slow down the rust dramatically. Not the rubberized type, the oil type that is sprayed everywhere. Obviously this won't bring back the paint that was lost and it would be very difficult to paint, coat, etc over the oil once it is applied, but the stuff works. Perhaps you could wire wheel it, treat it with por 15 or your choice, then get it sprayed

We used to have an 84 Celebrity that came in, lady got it undercoated every year, and it was sticky underneath, but absolutely no rust. One examble of many.

All this being said, you need to ask yourself a question: how long do you plan on keeping the truck. If it's more than 5 years than some attention now will pay off, if not, as long as you keep an eye on the fuel/brake lines, your best bet is to stop looking under the truck as the rust will be nothing more than cosmetic (at least in the time you own the vehicle)
