Do I Need New Cv Axles?

Maybe six months or so ago, I started noticing a grinding sensation when turning the steering wheel at low to moderate speeds. All of my front end joints are tight, steering u-joints and bearings feel good. Wheel bearings are definitely good.

I hear a light clicking when spinning the front wheels with them off the ground, and I can move the shaft between the inner and outer cv joints by hand maybe an eight of an inch.

Any reason to suspect anything other than the cv axles is making my steering grind? Am I right in assuming there should be ZERO play in the cv shafts?

What is bugging me is that it does this on BOTH sides. Did I get a bad set of cv axles from the factory? 109k on the ticker.

Thx,

Tom

ew the clicking leads me to the cv joints, how are the hubs?

Hubs felt gooood when I checked them in December. Steering sensation hasn't changed since. Totally tight and smooth. Only noise is the clicking, which points right at the cv joints. Just hoping someone can comment on whether a little play is normal or not.

phil,he said the hubs are good ,RTFP

its not your CV axles ,have a tech look at it ,DO NOT throw parts at it,

you can take them apart to see ,its not hard ,but you'll need new clamps for the boots

Yeah, the axles are supposed to move a little when you push/pull on them.

Grinding and clicking are good indicators of CV failure, but like Rob said....you cant be sure without someone having a look at it. Our idea of grinding sounds may be totally different from what you call grinding.

And 109K on a set of CV joints...assuming your stateside and mean Miles...I would say your doing good.

Spend the 50 or 100 bones and have a good shop look at it and tell you for sure....its cheaper than spending the 300 per axle and finding out it was something else.
