This Could Be Very, Very Bad

It isn't a recall at the moment, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reportedly looking into more than six million General Motors pickups and SUVs over brake line corrosion concerns. According to The Detroit News, the models in question date from 1999 to 2003, and they have been noted in 110 complaints and three alleged crashes due to a loss of braking performance. In 37 of those cases, inspecting dealers have confirmed brake line failures.

GM is apparently cooperating with NHTSA's investigation, and while 110 reported issues is a tiny fraction of 6.2 million, if you have one of the vehicles in question don't be afraid to have it looked at.

Oh goody...now GM can look forward to the unfair and severely damaging media attention that Toyota just faced...

Brake line in my '98 went out twice to the rear. First time it was underneath the bed along the frame rail, second time right near the drum. Both related to corrosion.

Brake lines rust????

Takes a number of years for them to rust to failure, I would think at some point during those years any reasonable (I use that term loosely) person in the rust belt would have a 7-10 year old vehicle inspected. Underbody corrosion is nothing new.

I replaced the rear brake metal line in my brother's 2003 Grand Cherokee it was rusted beyond repair. If you lice near salt water and/or the snowbelt expect this to happen to most over time and miles driven jeez.. utter nonsense

Probably a bunch of morons that live in the rust belt, and panic when then suddenly loose brakes when the line blows out. Its also probably going to be made a big deal because morons anymore know nothing about a vehicle and how it works to understand what has happened when something fails.

The government run media will never do that to a government owned company. Get serious.

Toyoda sucks, and deserves every bit of bad media they got. They block law enforcement from downloading their airbag control modules, and play stupid when they get subpoenas, claiming only 1 laptop in the USA can download-and the data is in testing phase, and has been since 1995!! If my congress wasn't jumping all over toyoda about an 8 million....8 MILLION vehicle recall, I would be PO'd. And, I'm sure the Obama Administration has control over fauxnews and their far right rhetoric. Fauxnews is sadly the number one news network, so not really sure where you get that the government has any control over the media.

how can you say government doesn't have control over the media? CNN? MSNBC? Do you ever watch any of these channels? All it is is liberal media, nothing else

If they are that far gone, its not worth the argument my friend.

Ah yes, the government will save me! Do you know that the maximim fine Toyota faces is only $2 per car as mandated by your congress? Still feeling good about government? Wake up man. This is nothing more that a witch hunt designed to reduce Toyota investor confidence and help boost American car sales.

Lets get back on topic and keep government and Obama out of it.

How can you have a brake line failure on a truck that is new? It must be at a connection point, or hard bend. (I didnt take time to read the article) Chances are this will end up being a suppliers quality control issue. I can only hope no one gets hurt and that the at fault supplier (assuming there is one) is from China or Mexico!

I agree with Chris, let's keep He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named Out of this. but most of these trucks and SUVs are 7-11 Years old, and most likely the brake lines have already been replaced a few times.

While it is a recall and will cost GM money, from a Media standpoint seems to me that it should end up being a positive. 1) They know what the problem is, 2) they are admitting it, 3) they are fixing it.

Makes me think, Thank you GM

That's why when I do upgrade my rotors and brake pads, I will also be switching to stainless steel braided brake lines...
