Yes... Another 4l60e Question

Just curious what the normal operating temp is for these transmissions. Mine is usually at 210*. Is that normal? Should I be worried? Where are your guys' tranny temps usually at?

That looks like a picture of your water temp gauge! My water temp hangs around 195, and when not towing my trans is about 110-130, while towing it can go as high as 180 in heavy traffic, I think I have seen it get as hot as 187.

Pretty sure that's your water temp gauge, which will be near the thermostat rating (which can be changed... usually in the range of ~180 to 210F).

You guys are right.. I just checked my owners manual and it says that's the "coolant temperature gauge".

But, then that means I don't have a tranny temp gauge. How will I know the temperature of the transmission?

I haven't owned a 2004, but my 99 GMT800 didn't have a transmission temp gauge. You can use a tuning/scan tool (e.g., Predator, Hypertech, etc.), but I didn't. It will throw a warning light if it gets too hot, or go to limp mode if it gets really hot.

I just changed the tranny fluid/filter on sunday and I never tow anything, so I should be fine right?

Yea you should be fine, If you really want to watch your tranny temp you can get a gauge package out of a SS or 2500, or you can get a scan gauge II, or areoforce. They are pretty cheap and can be used for a number of different things. I have the scan gauge and love it.

I'm the manager of a transmission company. Your transmisson is most likely fine unless you have a leak or are plowing or hauling without a trans cooler. Why did you just change your fluid and filter? How many miles do you have? If you trans starts to overheat it will throw a check engine code or go into safemode. But if you are just using it for regular driving and light hauling there is nothing to worry about until you have 125k miles plus.

Yes...I do a lot of non-towing driving and the gauge in my truck hardly moves...and if it's warm out...it still doesn't even reach 150 degrees.

thats a coolant temp guage...my 04 5.3 runs at 210 fully warmed up...no trans temp guage on the 1500s

That is the Engine Coolant gauge, the 1/2 ton trucks (1500 series) don't have a trans temp guage unless its a SS, I swapped in a guage cluster from a Gas HD truck. Here is a pic of the Trans temp guage, notice the different symbol. Also the trans temp guage would be on the left side of the cluster.

Here is a pic of mine while I was driving home from work last night in my 03 sierra with the HD cluster. (Truck driving 70MPH on the Interstate)

Yeah, I'm gonna have to get used to not having that gauge.. I've been driving around this whole time thinking that that's my trans temp gauge! I only changed the fluid and filter the other day because It's been a while since it's been done, not because I was noticing anything weird. :D

Why not just use DIC digital readout?

I do on my GMT900 (2008) this is on my GMT800, 2003 Sierra, it does not have the DIC

I have the DIC on my 2004 Sierra. Does that mean that I can view the temperature for the transmission on that?
