Truck Is Hard Starting When Low On Gas

Recommended Posts

So 2 weeks ago I went to start my truck after work. Gas light was on when I turned it off. I pushed the key to start, released it cranked but didnt start. Tried again and no luck plus I had to hold the key in the forward position to get it to crank. Then i did it a third time while hitting the gas a bit and she fired right up. No problems since till yesterday. Same exact situation. Got to work gas light was on. Left work truck was hard starting. Maybe fuel filter? Any thoughts?

Everytime you run low on gas and engine wont start your doing damage to the pump running it dry. You will soon be replacing the pump at this rate.

mine did the same thing yesterday..

don't let the tank get that low sounds like a good solution for us both.

damn $65 bucks later i guess i feel a little better about it.

^Agreed. You know what causes the problem -- just don't let the gas get that low. They all are hard starting when low on fuel.

i never had a truck or car for that matter do this. i run them low all the time and never had to replace a fuel pump. correct that my 87 caviler had a pump go bad at 160k miles. i think thats expected.

one of the main ingredients in the sweet action of the internal combustion engine is fuel. the absence of fuel, will almost always result in no combustion. on the same subject(fuel), a fuel tank's main purpose in life is to store fuel to be pumped to the fuel system by the fuel pump. a fuel pump's main purpose in life is pumping fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors. the fuel injector's main purpose in life is to atomize the pressurized fuel and spray the fuel into the combustion chamber. when you run a fuel pump dry, it will inevitably burn up. when you run fuel injectors dry, they will inevitably burn up. common sense should play a HUGE part in you answering your question here. best of luck to you.

Its having trouble starting, maybe a vapor lock. If you have a fuel light on when you shut it off, it takes a tank with fuel in it to keep that pump cool. If there is no fuel, the pump cannot be kept cool.

Never ever shut your truck off with the fuel light on. Them pumps are pretty durable, and will last 37k miles! Right when your warranty runs out. And then when it fails, you will of done the right thing for once, and filled the tank FULL of fuel!

Wow there are a few smart arses on the board. I understand how a internal combustion engine works. If it is so bad to run your tank down to the low fuel light then why dont they have the fuel light come on with 10 gallons in the tank ensuring that the pump stays submerged in fuel.

because then some asshat like you is going to get on an internet forum and whine about the low fuel light coming on way too soon.

My earlier reply may have had an attempt at humoring the situation, however it does lead you to what the end result of your habits will be.

NO the fuel light comes on to remind you to stop and put fuel in, and it lets you know when you have 10 galons just in case you're in BFE or you wife/gf/paid gf may be giving you head at the time and you don't want to stop and put fuel in.

It might have been the low gas and the pickup not engaging properly...how many miles?
