Why Is Changing The Oil For Me So Hard Today?

2000 Silverado 4.3l 2WD

 

So i havent changed the oil myself in my vehicle for a few years (been having a mechanic do it) and it was a nice day so i figured id go do it for something to do. I drained my oil, put on a new filter. put 4.5 quarts of oil in the truck and checked oil... it was a smeary mess on the dipstick and there was no way to tell if it was the right amount of oil. tried several times, cold, running, not running , hot.. couldnt get a reading at all. So I figured i have the right amount of oil according to the manual (4.5 quarts) so im good. I tried turning off the `change oil`light on the Message Center and it didnt work. stomped the gas 3 times with the key on RUN, 10 times 100 times it just kept blinking 5 times and would not go out no matter what i did.

 

Anybody know whats goin on here? would the wrong amount of oil keep the change engine oil light on? In the meantime im grabbing a beer.. never had an oil change like this before

I doubt resetting the "change engine oil" light has anything to do w/ the amount of oil in the engine. Are you accomplishing the reset procedure in the alloted time? Straight out of my owners manual:

 

To reset the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message do

the following:

1. Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off.

2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three

times within five seconds.

If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message flashes for

five seconds, the system is reset.

 

Sounds like you did get it reset....just didn't realize it.

The light has nothing to do with the amount of oil that's in there. You only have 3-5 seconds to fully press and release the gas pedal 3 times.

you got to give the new oil time to hit the pan to get an accurate reading man, as long as you know theres 4.5 quarts in the oil pan and its not falling out the drain plug hole or an untightened oil filter then your fine....some people don't even reset oil life because they don't know how lol

Let the truck sit overnight on level surface. Then check the oil level with the engine cold. Wipe the dipstick clean and insert all the way down the tube. I suspect that you had trouble getting good reading right after the oil change because the oil has not fully flowed down the dipstick tube yet and kept smearing the dipstick in the wrong places.

Lol, anyways I checked and now that the oil has drained the tube the reading is good... I was just concerned I had the slightly the wrong amount in there and that was causing the message center to keep blipping... Anyways I better go crush some beer cans on my forehead to

show my manliness after this snafu ... Lol
