Driveline Clunk - '08 1500

Recommended Posts

I have a very intermittant driveline clunk on my Sierra. I seems to happen sometimes once I am stopped and feels like someone has bumped into me. I searched around and there seems to have been a problems with the GMT800s driveshafts in the past. Does anyone know of anything for the 900s? Could there possibly be a TSB out for this? Any help is appreciated.

Don't worry about a TSB...just do this:

Lubin' the Slip Yoke (not as much fun as it sounds...)

This was my slip yoke when I removed my drive shaft...no lube at all...

Thanks P71. The reason I was looking for a TSB is that I wanted to get my dealer to fix this for me as I am still under warranty. I also read about the nickel plated driveshaft but wasn't sure if it applied to the GMT900's or just the 800's.

When you say lube the slip yoke are you packing that open end full of grease? Thanks

Problem with the dealer is I don't want to have them say 'we can't reporduce the problem' as it doesn't happen all the time. I just want to get things nailed down before the truck goes in on Wednesday. I was hoping that there might be some kind of bulletin out there about this that I could just hand them.

I just brought my new-to-me '08 Silverado C1500 home yesterday morning and noticed the clunk. Searched on the forums and followed the link in this thread to figure out the issue. This morning I removed the drive shaft and lubed the slip yoke with Green Grease. After a short test drive, the clunk seems to have disappeared for now.

The dealer will know what your talking about. They will lube it.

Add me to the list. Appointment for next Monday. Dealer knew exactly what I described and said it was covered under warranty.

Only lube your splines with Dex VI ATF. There was a bulletin put out a few months ago (I don't remember the bulletin number but it's in one of the posts about lubing the slip yoke). Basically it said don't use the GM grease or any other type of high temp/spline grease. There is not a seal that separates the slip yoke from the rest of the t-case's fluid and it mixes and they are not compatible with each other. Long story short is I did this a few times and went to change the fluid after I heard of the bulletin and there was a pinkish sludge around the drail hole of my t-case from where the two mixed and were not compatible (clunk never went away either so I just deal with it as being normal). I might spring for the nickle plated yoke but not sure if I want to yet.

I know this pertains to our 2008 models but can't remember what other years it covers. I'll see if I can find the bulletin.

I have had the same problem with my 08 1500 and had taken it to the dealer once already. They immediately knew what I was talking about and greased the yoke at no charge and sent me on my way. Fix worked for several months but the clunk returned again. So when I took my truck in for my third lock actuator replacement I told them that the clunk had returned thinking they would grease it again, but they called me back later that day and said the tech was ordering a new slip yoke (under warranty). I had read that there was a TSB about replacing the output shaft, so I thought the lady talking to me had simply mixed up the two. When I went to pick it up, I talked to the parts rep and he confirmed that they had put on a new slip yoke. I have only had it for a day, but the clunk is gone as of now, will be interesting to see if this solves the problem or not.
