I have a freind with a 95 silverado 2500 with a 454, he swears he will pull my 04 yukon xl 2500 8.1 4:10 rear 4l85e all over the place, hes a mechanic and has driven trucks with an 8.1 so im still surprised he really thinks he would win.

I see it me having him beat hands down..

-my wheelbase is longer

-i have more weight

-better tranny

-more...much more hp & tq

-and hes at 187,000 miles vs my 68,325 miles hes also pretty muck stock execpt for muffler and air filter,

So what do you guys think.. if he would really put his title up..is it a definite in me winning?? I really bilieve so

Assuming your going to do a truck pull. The only issue is with that kind of load torque managment might kill your power in the 8.1L. Also make sure he don't show with a load of sand or a bunch lead bolted to the frame underneath the bed. On the other hand street racing isn't good take it to a local track.

i have seen a nearly stock 1998 silverado 3500 DRW 454 110k miles race a stock 2004 CCLB sierra 8.1 about 80k miles and the 8.1 beat it by a truck length.. of course this was an illegal race on a back country road slightly uphill...

you 8.1 should kill it. my 0.02$

whats the deal with the tq managment, how does it work..or how will it affect me

to my surprise years ago i lost a pull to a ford f250 5.4L

just thought it was because he was heavier with longer WB 04 ford f250 ext cab long bed

01 silverado 2500hd reg cab long bed 8.1

was it the tq managment that made me lose,, or just because i was lighter and spinning tires in the stone

My tuned 7.4L with some other minor mods will smoke my dads 04 Silverado 8.1L Dually. I am a crew cab and he is extended cab. I figure a tune and exhaust is worth the 42 cubic inch differnce in displacement. Also his truck is factory rated at 30HP and 30 ft lbs of torque then mine. He is rated at 320HP versus 290HP for me and torque is 440 versus 410. So a tune and mufflers are an equalizer. The torque management is what saves the allison automatic in the 8.1L and D-max. That transmission in factory form won't hold much more then stock as it is. Torque management kicks in when the computer senses the truck under a load such as a complete stop with a heavy load in it. It then retards the timing to kill low end torque so the big block don't self destruct the transmission. That is the way I understand it. Alot of guys here in the forum always get the torque management removed or mostly removed and shift firmness increased when they tune there trucks. That helps the transmission a great deal.

so being that my yukon has a 4l85e not an allison. do i still havethis torquemanagment issue?

his tbi 454 is only rated at like 225 hp i bilieve. the vortec 7.4 is obviously much better

Being its a 4L85E you have a much better chance. I think the TBI 7.4L was a lil weak as I used to have one. It does make great torque though. The allison just for a lil FYI was designed to run behind a D-MAX not a big block and really isn't geared right for a big block. The 4L85E is a brute and better suited. It will have some torque management but not as much in my opinion.

so with a blackbear tune i will be able to eliminate some of the tq managment

Yep exactly! With a tune you can eliminate some or all of it. I had a Westers tune on my 01 6.0L and it made a noticable difference. I would leave a little torque management in just to save some wear and tear on the driveline. These guys that do the custom tunes really know their stuff, and can recommend exactly what you need.

Ahh... I thought it was the 4L85E that has torque management and NOT the Allison.

It doesn't make sense to put torque management on the stronger trans (Allison) and not on the weaker trans (4L85E).

torque management is in all semi-new GM trucks, and hooking chains and pulling is pretty lame lol

Posted

im not so much for the chain idea really either.. but thats the kind of guy he is phiscally 34, but mind and thoughts of a teenager.

Anyhow i would love to cut the torque managment in half for power/performance but still have some tranny safety

Posted

as you lower torque management on a stock trans your risking damage, i'd say beef the trans then delete some TM...just because he wants to act like a yokal and hook chains dosen't mean you have to, hooking chains only proves how well your tires grip and how low people value their truck
