2009 Sierra Hybrid

Are hybrid trucks worth the extra expense? I saw a new 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid on eBay and the MSRP is steep - about $ 43k for a 4X4 LT1 crew cab. The interesting part is that they use a 6.0 liter V8 engine with 330 HP and the AFM system as the base powerplant instead of the 5.3. The EPA mileage rating is the same for both city and highway driving: 20 MPG city and 20 MPG highway. The towing capacity for the truck is just over 6,000 lbs with the lame 3.08 gears. A soft tonneau cover is also standard.

I think the idea of a hybrid truck is just stupid. A truck is designed to work not to save gas. What is the max tow rating for the hybrid, 6k lbs? Even though, I don't tow that much I can't imagine how sluggish it would be for that load.

We have a neighbor who has a 2009 Tahoe Hybrid and it is a real winner, apparently. The family only tows a utility trailer, so that part has not raised its ugly head. As an SUV, they are entirely happy with the Hybrid Tahoe.

Interestingly enough, the mileage that the family is experiencing is considerably higher than that claimed. Guy (the dad) told me that hand-calculated fuel tanks of 100% city driving often figure out at 24 mpg. He told me that the big surprise came last year when they traveled from here (Portland, OR) to the Grand Canyon and back. Most of their driving was on highways and freeways and they got 25 mpg for the entire trip.

And with the 6.0 liter engine, even through it is transitioned through a 3.08 rear end, there is absolutely NO lack of power.

We had considerable snow last winter and Guy said that the heavy batteries that are under the rear seat put the weight just about perfectly between the front and rear wheels. They drove studded tires and reportedly never spun a wheel.

When we replace our 2004 Tahoe, I will take a serious look at the Hybrid Tahoe. It may not be as bad as we think.

One incredibly spooky thing; when Guy is cruising down our road at 10-15 mph and is about to turn into his driveway, the rig in totally on electric power ... and is it ever quiet. We have a blind lady who commonly walks our area and Guy says he as to watch out for her because the electric engine is so dang QUIET that she simply cannot hear the Tahoe coming.

It is sooooo weird to see the Tahoe and absolutely NOT HEAR it!!!!

Anyway, the Hybrid could be OK in the Tahoe. Hell, it may be OK in the Silverado.

Hybrids will offer no cost savings at all long term. People buy them to feel good about doing something for mother earth only, at the cost of much higher initial purchase costs, higher maintenace and HUGE repair bills when the hybrid system goes south. Batteries are not cheap.

I agree with that assessment. The initial purchase cost is significantly higher to incur any savings, unless you drive something like 40k miles a year. But then the batteries will need replacing around 100k miles or so and that can be pretty expensive. And I wonder how well GM trains their technicians to work on these systems. Hybrid electric systems present an additional safety risk when you work on them yourself. Also, special service equipment is required no doubt, and therefore you may have to take in it to dealer for most maintenance work.

I don't quite see the need for the hybrid pickup but the SUVs are nice. When I did a test drive of a Tahoe Hybrid I got 26 mpg and I was driving it like a borrowed car should be...hard. If you guys think that Hybrid pickups are that bad, I was told by a GM engineer that before the GMT-900s came out there was talk about front wheel drive pickups. And I swear that I am not kidding.

I think that there is a huge warranty extension on the battery and hybrid electronics on these trucks, something like 200k or something like that. Correct me if I am wrong.

A front wheel drive pickup would not be anything new. VW made a Rabbit front wheel drive compact pickup for years, and they also offered them with a diesel engine that got close to 50 MPG.

Not sure about what kind of batteries GM uses but those priuses have gone way over 200k on the original battery. Fact remains that when it's time to replace those batteries, it's going to be costly. When people say that hybrids are better for the environment, I always ask them what do they do with those used batteries?

I'm talking fullsize.

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
