hey all i just bought a 2002 GMC 1500 ext cab s/box its got a 4.8 and the 4L60E and not too sure on the t-case, the shifter is on the floor and it is a mechanical linkage i think, its got a tow package, and has definately been used for towing, it worries me though, i was told to expect between 200 to 250 thousand km on the tranny, i just was wandering if there was suposed to be a light or indicator of some kind when the tow/haul was engaged, and if it isnt working properly, is that gonna be a killer, and did i just buy a money pit, the tranny doesnt slip at all and shifts up and down verry smoothly, no tranny cooler either, any info???

If it doesn't have a tranny cooler, then it doesn't have a towing package.. Towing package was an aux cooler infront of the radiator, 7 way trailer connector, and a receiver type hitch..

i see, well it does have a very small rad up front but i thought that was for the ac or engine oil maybe, i didnt see any lines up to it from the tranny, it does have the reciever, 7 pin connecter, trailer brakes on the dash and tow haul and the shifter arm, so i assumed it had the tow package, any other way to tell?

Also, the light might just be out in the dash. Have you tried the tow-haul mode? You can tell a big difference in the shift points.

all of the truck's have the tow haul button..

There are a couple items infront of the radiator.. the ac condensor, a power steering cooler, and a aux tranny cooler right below the A shaped support infront of the radiator..

ill have to check that out again, but lets say it does have a cooler, would the tow haul feature not working be a sign of transmission failure and if it dosent have a cooler, would it mean the same thing, thanx

The wire thats runs from the button to the column is not very big. It has a habit of rubbing into or shorting out. Check that out. Its usually the problem.

Not necessarily....could be a fuse or an electrical connection problem. The cooler shouldn't be a link to the problem unless it's missing altogether.

failure to enter tow/haul mode is in not way an indication of a transmission problem. As snakedoctor said they wire is prone to failure. It is an orange wire under the dash and the button takes the wire to ground to toggle the system on and off.
