Body Molding Removal

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering if it is possible to remove the body molding on my 2005 GMC Sierra 1500? And if I do will the under neith portion be a different color or faded? I would like to strip it but I am not sure I should. Any advise would be very appreciated. Thanks,

The Paint under the molding SHOULD look as fresh as it was the day Your Sierra Came off the Assembly Line because the Molding has protected those areas from the elements.

So if anything those areas would stand out as the more true color since the rest of the truck has probably faded some. Am I thinking along the right lines?

That's correct!

So here is the real question. How severe of a color difference do you think there would be? I think it would look better without the molding but not if I have an odd colored line on my truck after.

I would remove the molding on the GMT-800 trucks, I think they look great on the GMT-900 trucks though. Only one way to find though, that way is to remove the moldings.

Moldings are typically down low enough that direct sunlight doesn't really fade the paint much (if at all). I doubt fading will be an issue, but it would be nice if you told us where you are and what color the truck is.

I drive a 2005 Gray GMC Sierra Crew Cab SLE. The first owner lived in Wyoming, second owner lived in Salt Lake City Utah, and I am located in Southern Idaho. I would like to remove the side chrome moldings is what I want to get rid of. Thanks for your help.

I think you'd be plenty safe as long as you are sure it hasn't been repainted on either side. Some shops paint around moldings when they do repairs. It would be very obvious when you pulled them off if so.

I've seen it done plenty of times with great success. I don't think it will be a problem. I recently saw an episode of "TRUCKS!", where they took off the moldings off a silverado to fix some body damage. The truck looked better without them. I'm thinking a heat gun and a plastic spatula. Good luck, and don't forget to get some pics once you do it.

It has not been repainted so I am good there. What is the best way to get them off?

You should have no problems then.

Best way is to get a corner started and then just peel them off. Works best if you can heat them or leave that side in the sun for a while. It takes a lot longer to peel off the glue/tape than it does to remove the molding.
