3:08s With 6 Speed

Been looking at new trucks and found several with 3:08 gears, really wanting 3:42s but havent driven a 3:08 truck yet. My question is for those who have them how do they drive. I have 3:42s with the 4sp now that im comparing too but i drove a 3:42 6 speed and didnt notice much difference on the test drive between the 4 and 6sp.

You must not have been trying very hard.

No i didnt get a chance to get on it, traffic was pretty bad.

Love mine! More specifically doing 120 -130 kph and not breaking 2000 RPM  I towed a tilt-and-load with 2 4x4s on it and it did a great job too.

It really depends on what you are looking for. I was looking for better fuel economy.

What kinda gas mileage are you getting? I typically get 16 around town with 3:42s and 4speed. Guess ill have to go test drive it tomorrow and decide which i like better.

Mine is great. I love it! Was a bit unsure when I bought it but I would take it over my 5.3 w/ 3.73 4 spd. It's great for cruising and I don't tow anything so I think it's a great combo for a daily driver.

i have a 4sp with 4:10,s and love it.. had 4spd,s with 3:73 and it was great also but i can tell you i wouldnt want any less than that, my personal opinion is with a 6sp it should have 4:56,s

I just cant imagine having 3:42 or 3:08 with 2 extra gears, there must be 0 low end pull or acceleration.

I guess if your just driving to work or getting groceries it would be fine..

if you drove a truck with 3:08,s and drove the same truck with 4:10,s it would feel like you tuned it or adding anything for that matter.

I did not want a 3.08 axle and I looked for a month to find a truck I could accept with a 3.42, since a 3.73 is unavailable anymore unless you order the max trailering option.

So far in the first 2000 miles my mileage has not gone below 18mpg, it been hovering around the 18.3 to 18.5 mark and the longest ride has been 200 miles, mostly it around town mileage but where I live I can count traffic signals on one hand so not as much stop and go.

compleatly depends on what you mostly do. just commuting back and forth to work the 3:08 are great if you tow all the time your you would prefer a different gear but the 3:08s do pull pretty good. ive got the 3:08 and i dont tow anything often so it works out good

Depends on how much you tow/haul (or race?). For towing, I'd say that up to ~5k lbs, the 3.08 is going to feel good. Much higher, and the 3.42 is going to accelerate and pull hills stronger. Personally, I tow a 7k lb camper w/ the 5.3/4-spd/3.73, and I'd be a little worried whether the 5.3/6-spd/3.42 could pull some hills I've been across at hwy speeds without dropping to 2nd (and screaming), so a 3.42 is the least I'd go for my needs.

remember guys, the 6 speed has a deeper (taller) ratio for the 1st two gears:

Gear Ratios: for 6l80e

1st: 4.02

2nd: 2.36

3rd: 1.53

4th: 1.15

5th: 0.85

6th: 0.67

4L60E gear ratios:

1st 3.06,

2nd 1.75,

3rd 1.00,

4th 0.70.

first two gears really help launch and 6th helps with fuel economy

have no problems pulling any trailers with the 3.08.

Just got back from Florida trip with a single car enclosed and had no problems going up and down on I-75 from ohio

If you combine the tranny ratio and final gear ratio then 4th and 5th in a 6spd/3.08 are pretty much the same total gearing as 3rd/4th in a 4sp/3.73.

Combined tranny/rear end ratio

4spd/3.73

1st 11.41

2nd 6.53

3rd 3.73

4th 2.61

6spd/3.08

1st 12.38

2nd 7.27

3rd 4.71

4th 3.54

5th 2.62

6th 2.06

6spd/3.42

1st 13.75

2nd 8.07

3rd 5.23

4th 3.93

5th 2.91

6th 2.29

Now if you are on a hill with a 4spd/3.73 where 3rd gear ain cuttin it you gotta drop all the way to 2nd with a total gearing of 6.53 which will probably be too much gear. Where as with both 6pds you can use 3rd or 4th which fall between 2nd and 3rd in the 4 speed.

ah, didnt do the calculations with the 3.08 rear end....

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
