Just Drove A 2010 Tundra

I always enjoy reading other people's observations when driving different trucks so I'm putting this out there. Had the chance to drive a 2010 Toyota Tundra 2WD today with 5.7 and 4.30 rear end. Now I have a 5.3 with 3.42 and six speed so that's what I'm comparing it to. Obviously bigger motor and better gearing gave the truck an advantage right off the bat. The truck was very quick and there was absolutely no hesitation when taking off or downshifting like I have with my truck. That six speed performs like I wish mine would. You could still feel the shifts take place but they were very quick and precise as opposed to tumbling through the shift as mine does. I can't say anything bad about the drivetrain. Now the interior felt extremely cheap to me. It was almost like they were trying to be to moderistic. I had a Titan before my silverado and I would say the interior was somewhat close to that. The ride was not near as smooth as my truck and you felt most of the bumps in the road. The steering radius was very good and the truck drove small to me. Felt like you could manuveur around pretty good in that full size truck in tight spots. Anyway just my opinion and I'm sure other will think differently and that's OK.

It's a killer drivetrain combo, that's for sure.

I just can't get past the part where a) I don't like the interior and b) the exterior looks like the results of a bulldog mating with a shoe. But that's just opinion. There are people that like the looks (and the interior)...If we all liked the same thing, the world would be a booooooring place.

Thanks for the review. Toyota gets A LOT of attention these days. I am curious about their truck. Tacoma is always to small for me. I wonder about that Tundra though sometimes. I haven't driven one though. I think the gas mileage is a little less than a 5.3 silverado too. My 5.3 has plenty of tow power when I need it but most of the time I'm driving empty down the highway so that is a consideration.

Oh...They get horrible mileage.

Of course, the way I drive, everything gets horrible mileage :D

didnt you keep chirping the goat's tires to see where there would hit in the wheel well (in the rear wells)??? :D:):):)

I'm with you there... my 5.3L full size truck gets the same gas mileage my TBSS did around town (11-12 MPG). Luckily it's still cheaper since I'm running 89 Octane instead of the 94 I put in the LS2.

:D

I've heard some very good things about the drivetrain, but to me, the looks are very important too. I just can't get over the way the Tundra looks. I know it's all a matter of personal opinion, but I think the Tundra is friggin' UGLY!

I definitely second that notion, but like you say, it's a matter of opinion.

Only at every stoplight. Just once or twice.

I'm not starting the urinary olympics here but I have a new silverado...5.3/6 speed and I get a tad over 18 around town...ok power for towing...fairly comfortable......and stuff the jap crap

not pointed at anyone in particular

Well, I have own all three trucks ('08 Tundra, '09 5.3 Silverado, '10 6.2 Silverado). I can tell you that the Tundra has a very good drive train. The six speed is very responsive and good amount of power when you step on the gas. MUCH MUCH less torque management than GM. I didn't mind the look of the truck really but I did mind that the frame on that truck is not very stiff at all. Riding on concrete road is very uncomfortable. When I had the '09 Silverado, the power is no where near the Tundra. Take offs were slow and overall power was lacking. But the Silverado rides much better. Therefore, I was really missing the responsiveness of the Tundra. Well, that problem was solve when the 6.2 came out. I knew I had to upgrade to that engine. The power difference is small when comparing to the Tundra but it's noticeable. Of course the ride is a lot better. I wish GM would put a standard bed in the crewcab instead of the short bed.

Well I owned both a 2010 Siverado Z71 Crew and just traded in my 2008 Tundra DC and im glad I did. You may appreciate the Tundras drive train but the rest of the truck needs alot of work IMO. The tailgate on these trucks are welded together aluminum cans, it is by far the worst tailgate in the history of trucks. While twice loading my Grizzly atv I had two different failures where the cheap welds on the end of the tailgate broke the tailgate chassis from the skin and both times nearly dumping me and the atv on the ground which could have been very bad. Overall the paint and the body as a whole is very thin, reminds me of the doors on a Honda Civic. The rigidness of the rear frame is a joke, when traveling on rough roads or off road above 20 mph or so the bed and the entire rear of the truck is all over the place and the bed bounce makes the truck difficult to handle. The ALSD system is a joke when compared to Chevrolet locking rear diff which isnt available oem or aftermarket for the Tundra. The interior is very cheap, actually had my dash replaced once and needed it again as it sagged on the sides and where the defroster is. It scratches way to easy, hard to keep clean and I think the cluster could be redesigned as well, the Silverado is alot better layout and provides much more info from the drivers seat. We wont get into how difficult up keep was on this truck, oil changes with the recommended synthetic oil rivals the cost of a diesels oil change which we all know are expensive. The oil filter required a special ordered filter wrench to change your own oil and the truck held between 8 and 8.5 quarts. Overall I miss the quickness of the Tundra but other than that teh Silverado wins about everywhere else IMO

    • Thank You Another JR, I watched the transmission temp the highest was 214, the engine temp seemed normal.  Hoping not a valve body issue, but...
    • dexos began as an effort for GM to control the oil change market because the Quick Lube Industry was eating into dealer service department profits big time. So they attempted to get other oem’s to develop standards as well and that would make it hard for Quick Lubes to compete because all the oems would be different. GM faced lot of industry push-back, mostly the quick-lube industry and they went to licenses. Still GM it making a ton of money (est'd 30-40 million in 2025) off the license structure as they charge a hefty fee to get oil tested then require a royalty on ALL gallons sold applicable to GM vehicles.
    • Those are parts changers. It can get expensive though. I was a mechanic for 30 yrs. My truck has made this noise since new. I really don`t know what it is. It really doesn`t bother me. I`m still in warranty but have not brought it to the dealer.   I`m not buying the oil pump prime thing. Screw the TSB. I believe it`s in the trans pump gears. They rattle when that piss poor ULV oil drains off after a while. I believe those sharp tooth gears, with backlash, can rattle when dry. Not a vane style oil pump. Wonder who`s right? Me, or the TSB?🤔   Maybe I`m wrong?
    • Sounds about right. I miss the days of mechanics lol.
    • On the PCM side, blue PCM connector, pin 18, solid gray color (no stripe) wire circuit 435.  That is the EGR low circuit which an issue on that line (be it the wiring, the PCM or the EGR valve or system performance) will trigger P0401 when it tests that code.     There is also a VERY old TSB that states to make sure you clear the DTCs ANY time the PCM is unplugged, reprogrammed, or if the EGR valve is unplugged or replaced as the PCM has an auto zero function in the PCM for the EGR pintle data   61-65-59: SMU - SECTION 6E - ENGINE CONTROLS - CLEAR DTC'S - (Nov 25, 1996)   "CLEAR ANY DTCS FROM THE VCM ANYTIME AFTER DOING VCM REPLACEMENT/ PROGRAMMING, TURNING THE IGNITION ON WHILE THE EGR VALVE IS DISCONNECTED, OR REPLACING THE EGR VALVE."   Some diagnostic aid notes in the GM diag on P0401 for a 1995 S10 Blazer:   Diagnostic Aids Notice: In order to prevent further damage if the EGR valve shows signs of excessive heat, check the exhaust system for blockage (possibly a plugged converter) using the procedure found on the restricted exhaust system check. If the exhaust system is restricted, repair the cause; one of which might be an injector which is open due to one of the following reasons: Stuck Grounded driver circuit Check the oil for possible fuel contamination if a stuck open fuel injector is found. Poor connection or damaged harness - Inspect VCM harness connectors for the following conditions: Backed out terminal BL 18 Improper mating Broken locks Improperly formed or damaged terminal Poor terminal to wire connection Damaged harness Intermittent test - If connections and harness check OK, monitor a digital voltmeter connected between terminal BL 18 and ground while moving related connectors and wiring harness. If the failure is induced, the voltage reading will change.
