Blackbear In Person Data Logging Tune

I went to buffalo NY, for the in person tune and thank god i did, justin sqeezed me in as last tune of the day, we met at 8:40 and finished at around 10. The best part was there was no rush, and we did more repair/troubleshooting than i imagined, I got to see and figure out codes that were never known about, and fixed important timing&fuel issues that made the 8.1 run like it was supposed to, you can instantly tell after the tune that the engine is running at peak effeiciency.. i gained an honest 3-4 MPG, besides the tranny/shifts feeling SO much better, on my application its not torque managment, but a 60 sec delay for full throttle, that we eliminated, throttle response is great.. along with the engine sounding better...sounds like a big block should. Also took care of my tire size and got the speedo accurate, and tuned for the new 180 stat in installed,

So Big thanks to justin and his knowlegde and patience. look foward to dealing with you again in the future.

I had the same experience with Justin as well. He definately knows what he's doing and is very patient. I didn't see the mileage gains I thought I might get, but at least it has more torque and is just more driveable. I'm acutally thinking of tuning for 91+ if he ever makes it out my way again to see if that would give me a little more grunt as well. We just went with the 87 tune with some TM removed. No doubt it is the best mod you can do for the money hands down.

I don't understand why you guys need a tune. We haul 13,000#

through the WV mountains with the 2010 chev and do OK.

Sure..we could do the gofaster thing but why? This combo

does fine stock and why put more stress on the drivetrain than

necessary?

thats like comparing a geo metro to a 2010 camaro. It's just that much better to go faster. I mean everyone has there prefrence but i would still love to go faster but thats the young in me

i needed a tune because my engine had some minor issues to be resolved, and its not all about the "go fast" thing

justin got me to gain 3-4 MPG...

If your not interested fine, just read a different post!

Hey Ron, thats awsome. I talked to Brian at Harris Performance(TBIchips.com) said he could really help. Can't wait to meet him and get my "Wanda" running right.

its personal preference, i think a tune is a great investment if your looking to tap into more of the engine's power, but on the other hand your risking more stress on the drivetrain..

I juts find that really odd you gaining 3-4 mpg. Why wouldn't GM have tuned the 8.1 that way in the first place then. I'm sure it's current mileage turned many people away when it was available with a 3/4 ton truck. Unless the tune effects the emmissions now, which in this case would be a red flag at inspections.

Speaking of inspections, I recently learned that NJ as of Aug 1rst will now NOT fail you for the following: window tint on front and passenger side windows, bulb out, any broken tail lights or even windsheild. The state is making cutbacks and will only be testing emmissions only, no testing of brakes either!

Over time, tune programmers find ways to improve the "old" software to make things run better. That's the great thing about new technology, finding ways to fix what was "perfect" in years past. Also a major reason people get tunes on the GM trucks is to get rid of the stupid Torque Management that limits truck's performance. Most folks complain of slow throttle response due to the torque management. A tune fixes this to make the truck act more like a V-8 instead of a V-6.

the mpg improvment isnt a guess.. on the way to buffalo cruise control at 72 mph was bouncing between 9-11 mpg.

on the way home 72-78 mph i was 13-15 mpg

But you did say in the op, that you had your odo and speedo adjusted for your tire size, correct? That in itself makes a big difference in recorded MPG

    • No I didn’t watch a video of a person who analyzes oil for a living explain general oil usage. For clarity I did ask my brothers one who runs our equipment business. The other who runs our old ROW business about oil usage. Nothing has changed since I retired. Their personal vehicles or work vehicles use no oil. Not enough to see on the oil checking device. Then I pondered. I like to ponder. In this extended oil changing world with oil change countdowns or lights. If engines used say a qt every 2500 miles or up to even 4000 miles. With oil changes reaching as high as 15000 miles. Normal for most people is eight to ten. Vehicles should potentially be seizing up all over the place. Especially in hilly terrain. Just how many people actually check their oil? Maybe 10 percent. Those are the people that probably change their oil early. I like to research used car listings. I have five favorite dealers I check. They all list carfax with their listing. It’s rare to see vehicles with anything but extended oil changes. Transmission service, forget about it. I’ve seen Honda and Toyota certified vehicles up to 100K miles and ten years old. With nothing but normal maintenance. Isn’t nice we all have different experiences and believe our way is the best. You certainly get backup for whatever you believe. Life would be boring otherwise.
    • Interesting rumor. Dealers near me have been tight-lipped so far, but if this reveal actually happens next week, I'm really hoping they finally give the HD a proper interior overhaul. The competition has been eating their lunch in the cabin department for a while now.
    • There are a few good takeaways in that video that pertain to this thread, certainly the possibility of the oil control rings having buildup, the fuel injectors and how clean or not that they are ending up affecting the pistons rings carbon buildup, and the fact that its normal up to a point for a given engine to use some oil, and that the oil quality that is being utilized is part of that ring clogging up issue as well.   I was talking with a neighbor yesterday who has a baby LZ0 duramax and he had bought it slightly used but it does consume some oil and he has switched over to 5W-30 Euro spec oil and in this case that never made a difference in consumption over the factory 0W-20 recommendation. He finds it uses a quart in about 3500 miles and as he goes a ways over that distance he adds oil to full and goes another 1000 miles or so and then changes oil and is typically at 40% or so left on the oil monitor at that point with his use case of quite a lot of highway miles and more limited in short run use. I don't know what other LZ0 engines are doing for oil consumption but that is what his is doing.
    • I dont care what Lake says. Goodnight.
    • Ok well I guess Lake disagrees with me on a few points. I call oil consumption pretty basic. Rudimentary. He calls it "really complicated." I think 1qt consumed in 3k miles is a lot. He says that's normal. In 22 minutes, he'll use his natural talent to explain oil consumption to anyone watching this video. He covers everything from obvious engine damage to how normally functioning healthy engines consume oil by design. Lake explicitly states how you drive will impact oil consumption.   Shut up and watch:
