Rear Drum Brakes Gmt-900

Anyone else notice that your rear brakes are "grabby" and squeaky if the truck sits for a few days? It only happens for the first couple brake applications, but it's really annoying! Today, I applied the brakes coming to a stop at the entrance to my driveway and they actually locked up on me with only a light foot pressure! I had the truck in to the dealer for this shortly after I purchased it and they "adjusted" them, but they were still grabby in the morning. I figured that as the shoes wore a bit, this problem would go away but it's getting worse. Anybody deal with this or have a fix? I've checked the wheel brake cylinders and bearing seals for leaks, but it's dry in there.

Gentlemen,

I have always believed that this was the result of either the linings absorbing moisture or the raw metal of the drum running surface getting a thin layer of rust. They all seem to do it. Thank goodness it goes away after a few stops.

Same thing happens on my 30 year old truck as well. The first application leaving my driveway takes care of it.

Sometimes when I go through the carwash at work one side will grab a little bit (my truck is still fairly new). But it only happens a once or twice if I use the brakes right away. I had a 1990 oldsmobile that did it WAY worse.

Mine is exactly the same. I actually slid a rear tire (or both, not sure) in some loose gravel one time because they were locked up. I've noticed mine will stay somewhat locked until I hit the brakes with some speed, not just barely moving around the driveway.

Mine does it from time to time.

Mostly if its rained during the night or if there's a lot of moisture in the air.

They don't grab bad but its noticeably and goes away after the first braking.

I had never had this happen with mine until last Sunday afternoon. I washed my truck early Saturday morning and parked it in the garage. It did not move until Sunday when I was leaving to go to Alabama. When I started pulling out of the garage, I touched the brakes and skidded the rear wheels. Shocked me. Immediately I thought Great Something else wrong with it. I pulled on out in the driveway and it did not grab again, nor has it since. At least I am glad to hear you guys are experiencing the same thing too so I will not give it any more thought until there is proof that there is something wrong.

BTW, why did Chevrolet go back to drums on the rear? Seems like that is going backwards to me.

I've noticed that too. It's been very humid here this summer and the "morning sickness" from the rear brakes seems to follow. I hope this thread doesn't devolve into drums vs. discs again!

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I usually only drive the truck one day a week unless I take it somewhere on the weekend as well. So it does sit in the driveway for long periods of time.

Every year or so I pull the drums and blow all the brake dust out and clean off every thing real good. I never have this problem. Brake dust build up can cause noises or sticking in certain situations.

Every day first thing when it sits longer than a few hours, they also squeal terribly during this time. This means when I leave for work and when I leave work. I figure it's normal as it goes away completely after the first stop sign or stop light,

Has never been an issue for me, as I'm just "aware" of it I guess, so I don't lock 'em up when I leave home or work.
