Truck Warranty Ending Soon

Recommended Posts

As the title says my warranty is ending on my Silverado in the not too distant future, so I'm looking for suggestions on what I should have checked or watch for before it ends.

Also how many have purchased an extended warranty? Is it worth it?

P.S. Yes I realized after I posted this that I used 'too' instead of 'to'. :jester:

As for extended warranties, it depends on how comfortable you are with having to pay for repairs. I purchased one for my 2005 GMC before the initial warranty expired and it has paid for itself already. It's not for poor people. I had an '89 Mustang 5.0 LX that I purchased brand new and I also purchased an extended warranty for it as well before the mfg warranty expired. After owning it for 6 years, it developed a problem that the local dealer couldn't diagnose and had to bring in engineers from Detroit to try and correct. It took them weeks to fix the problem and I don't think I would have been too happy to have paid that bill and rental vehicle cost if I didn't have the extended warranty.

As for things to look for I would make sure there are no leaksof any kind around the engine or differentials because I've seen dealers not tell you there is something wrong when it's in for service if they know the warranty is about to expire. That happened to me with this 2005 Sierra as my GMC service dealer didn't say anything about my water pump leak but when I took it to the Chevy dealer for its annual inspection (Texas law), he showed me the orange dex cool leaking slightly from the water pump and said it wasn't a major issue but to keep a watch on it. At the tiime, I was about to head to South Padre which is an 8 hour drive from where I live. When I took it back to the GMC dealer to get it fixed (Chevy dealer couldn't do warranty work at that time) the service advisor called me later that morning to tell me the water pump was about to go out.

I didn't buy the vehicle from this GMC dealership and probably won't ever buy a truck from them based on this issue alone, but they are cheap when changing the oil, $9.84 when I provide them the Mobil 1 oil and Purolator Pure One/Mobil 1 extended performance oil filter.

Just my $0.02.

If you are the original owner and take care of it as far as maintenance is concerned, I wouldn't worry about extending the warranty. Hopefully luck will be on your side. As far as warranty work, I would have them look at the whole truck if possible. Some quick things that come to mind are,

-Battery

-Leaks

-Recalls (heated windshield washer)

-Window Tracks? (I heard they were doing something about creaky earlier versions)

-Door Lock Actuators (notorious for failing)

-Seat Fabric Bulletin (assuming it's a cloth model)

I know a couple people it paid out quite well for the extended warranty..... My sister was one of them. She bought a 2004 Expedition brand new, in 4 years she managed 130k..... about halfway in the 3rd year the a/c compressor puked..... It was 2k for the warranty..... She took the truck to one of my customers and had the A/C fixed... Ticket price for the A/C job 2200 bucks.... They had to replace the aluminum lines going from the front to rear and the rear evaporator, along with the normal stuff (compressor, orifice, expansion valve for the rear, dryer)....... Also, at the time the only way to get the A/C stuff was from Ford.... Soooooo, it paid out well for her.

But me my truck has only been in to the dealership for recall stuff..... It would have not paid out anything and would have been a bad idea for me.

In 2007, I purchased the extended warranty through GM. It was $1800 at purchase time. The truck was so good, it never saw a dealer for anything. That truck is pictured below. I recently traded it in at the dealer for a 2011 GMC All-Terrain. They gave me a $900 rebate on my remaining extended warranty and applied it to my 2011. It now extends my bumper-to-bumper to 7yrs/60,000. The dealer made my old 2007 a GM certified vehicle and passed that savings back to me on trade. So, this is an axample of when you don't use it you can still use it.
