I've been having this problem for a while now.

I put a new altinator on my 98 GMC 5.7L Truck and right away it started squeling. The gage would read bout 10 or 11 and when it reached 14 it would stop squeling...so i unplugged the a/c compressor and it would stop for the most part.

well i was told that my compressor was locked up so i had it replaced but the squel is still there. i have put on a new belt, tensioner, battery(wal-mart??)...

What is my next move??

Thanks

does the truck have a stationary idler pulley that has a bad bearing?

If it was maxed out right when you put it on there the belt is too big and is going to slip. It will get worse and worse over time as the belt stretches, also. Once the engine warms up, the belt shrinks and tightens causing the squealing to stop.

Check to make sure you have the correct belt. Some alternators-depending on amperage-require different length belts. Either belt will work but the longer belt will squeal because under load it is slipping. When the load decreases the squeal stops.

Well i think i'll go to the GM dealer in town and try a new belt tonight then. The idler pulley is only $20 from the parts store, might as well throw that on too and rule that out at the same time.

Like someone else mentioned, make sure it's for the 105 amp alt.

It does have an idler pulley right in the middle at the top, i could try replacing that one. I guess that bearing could stop squeling after it warms up...?

Yes, very common. If you pull the belt off, it should spin smooth like it's lubed. If it's dry and you can feel it turn "scratchy like" for a better term, it's screwed.

Typically you'll find the dry idler issue when it's winter time. Once it spins a bit, then it'll typically stop (unless it's totally screwed).

Thanks Guys, turns out the $50 belt i prevously bought from advanced was too long...the new one i bought from GM last night fit much better and eliminated the squel.

Thanks again for the help.
