2002 8.1 Stalls While Driving.

Hey guys, I have a 2002 2500HD Silverado with the 8.1. Lately it's been stalling on me while driving. If you guys could help diagnose the problem I'd appreciate it. While driving any speed, turning, straight line, at a stop, anything, the truck will just randomly stall and i'll lose power steering and everything (obviously). However when I start the truck up again mere seconds after stalling, it fires right up like nothing happened. What could this be guys? I'm clueless, I'm thinking the fuel pump or something along those lines, but I'd assume if it was the fuel pump it would stall ALOT more than it is. Maybe the alternator or something? I'm at a loss, as I'm no mechanic :) . Any help would be appreciated guys.

Crank Position Sensor. Common problem on early 8.1's. They went to a new design.

I had the same symptoms. I just replaced the Crank Sensor tonight. It fixed the issues and fixed the hesitation that I've had since I bought the truck.

Might want to check fuel pressure first. But itis probably the crank sensor. It is on the back of the engine. Difficult to get to. Has one bolt holding it in...and the theres an oring...maybe two. Just make sure it comes out in one piece.

They all pretty much have problems, however the only year which was recalled for it was 2001. If I started to have issues with an 8.1 stalling or stumbling, it would be the first thing I would check on. Otherwise they have the same fuel sender problems as most other GM trucks and I would check that next or possibly a fuel filter. Stubby 10mm wrench to get the sensor out from the top of the back of the block on the driver's side (you will want to use penetrating oil on it first). You should do a crank relearn after this but it is not 100% necessary.

Has anyone ever broke the cps while taking it out, if so how did you get it out.

Mine broke, but was still held together by the three wires. The bottom O-ring got hung up, used some more penetrationg oil and carefully drove it out....got lucky.

it is behind your starter, very easy to fix i just swung mine out of the way, i cant believe how expensive it was tho it was like 60 bucks for a part the size of a golf ball
