Tired Of Daily Driving Already?

I got my truck in June. It had 5 miles on it when I got in to first test drive it, trading in sir-breaks-a-lot.. my 2007 corvette that cost me $1000 a month in repairs in the 5 months that I owned it.

 

I got the truck for a number of reasons.

 

1. it was new and had a warranty so I wouldn't be doling out tons of cash and exhaust my savings to own it

2. It was a truck.. trucks are practical. I found out very quickly with the vette that I couldn't even do basic things like run to sams club and buy bulk paper towels or shelving for my garage or even small pieces of furniture in it. It was difficult to take a vacation in too.

3. insurance.

4. I had a rather high APR on the car and it was for 60 months. It was already 3 years old and was out of warranty because of it's age.

5. I had to baby the car and use special microfiber wash mits, special service companies cos I couldn't rtust just any joe mechanic to work on it, and always had to park far away form everyone.

 

the truck lowered my monthly payment by a good bit, almost halved my insurance, gave me a full factory warranty, a practical towing/hauling/4wd that's snow capable for a 0% APR.

 

But.. I live in a city.. I commute 62 miles a day at minimum in bumper to bumper traffic.. and this truck.. is absolutely AGONIZING to drive in traffic because of how slow it is. I have had a number of irritating moments and even a few close calls because the truck won't get out of the darned way fast enough. I am tired day after day of being stuck behind a slow moving car becaues my truck is too slow to pass, or being cut off because I'm too slow to take off at a redlight, or having someone dart in front of me then poke along because they think that I'm slow. My commute has taken 15-30 minutes longer per day every day since I've been driving this vehicle because of how slow it is and it's inability to maneuver through traffic.

 

So.. I catch myself.. the last few weeks looking at cars when I've JUST bought something brand new..

 

what's a guy to do? I really can't get rid of it yet.. a new truck has a lot of negative equity.. but I can probably get rid of it next year.. How do you folks put up with your trucks being so slow if you daily drive them?

but no matter what engine you have a few basic bolt ons and a quality tune such as blackbear will wake that truck up.

You think these trucks are slow, you should drive a F150 for a little while, these trucks are actually kinda zippy compaired to that.

 

But how could you even begin to compare a truck to a Vette, surely you did not expect the same performance, they are built for two entirely different purposes, you did test drive the truck before you bought it didn't you?

 

Lets hook my travel trailer to a vette and see how well it does.

 

Maybe you should just learn not to be such an aggressive driver and just go with the traffic flow, sorry you are so unhappy but quit kickin these trucks, we love them, they are fast, for a truck, just not compared to a sports car.

Well, first off.. these trucks aren't slow when equipped right. What motor and gears do you have? Depending on what gears you have, a gear swap would be a BIG difference and coupled with a custom tune will make a big improvement. AND.... will be alot cheaper than trading again.

 

A BB tune will dramatically make the truck drive and feel different. One of the first things you'll notice is the lack of throttle delay. Factory setting is HORRIBLE. Get a custom tune then post again about how the truck drives. I'll bet you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn't of traded in corvette, no way!! Especially a ls9 with twin turbos.

What motor and rear gear do you have? My 5.3 with a 3.42 and 6spd is not a corvette but it's certainly not a slug either.

OK, a couple of things..

 

I noted in the original post my reasons for getting rid of the vette..sorta..

 

1. it was costing me a fortune to maintain. It was breaking literally costing me $1000 a month trying to fix problems it had.

2. insurance was twice what it is for the truck

3. though it was MONSTER fast, it was so close to the ground I could barely drive it here. I scraped a number of times including in my own driveway and daily on my commute home.

 

I bought the vette because I'd always wanted one, but after owning one as my daily/only driver I quickly learned it was not the right car at the right time.

 

Yes, I test drove the truck, this is probably the 5th or 6th GM truck I've owned, the 3rd that I've daily driven. This is the 1st one that has felt slow however.

 

It's a 2010 GMC Sierra K1500 XCSB all terrain with the 5.3 and 6 speed AT. I do not know the gear ratio.

 

I would just be a less aggressive driver, but this city is cut throat. I mentioned in my op that it's costing me 15-30 minutes 1 way every day of time to get to and from work because of how slow the truck is. I used to get up at 5:30 and get to work by 7:30. Now I'm getting up at 4:45 and getting to work at 7:40. It's looking bad on my work record to be coming in late every day.

 

Apparently.. the 6.2 was not offered in the XCSB? I'd actually never seen a Vmax truck on a dealer's lot before. I've looked and looked, they don't seem to sell them here for some reason. I've seen a few on the road though. I really don't see it as practical however to drop in a new engine, completely void my warranty, fail emissions, and spend $10k in mods on a vehicle that hasn't yet had it's first oil change.. so that's not something I can consider.

 

would a BB tune make such a big difference that I can actually pass people again? I'm CERTAINLY not asking for corvette performance, but.. I gotta be able to do this without putting it to the floor and holding it there for 5-7 seconds several times in my commute. It can't be good for a vehicle to flog it like that.

It seems to me that you do not know what a slow car is. Recently I had a 2010 Dodge Caliber for a rental car. A 2.0 liter 4 banger and 4 speed automatic. Talk about a gutless car! No power whatsoever while accelerating from a standing stop - nothing but noise for a few seconds before the thing started moving. My truck is a hotrod compared to this heap. I believe that the factory torque management settings were a lot more forgiving on GMT 800 models, as they did not offer the 10 year/100k miles powertrain warranty.

Yes, BB tune really makes a difference. From the factory, the throttle delay is horrible, to the point of "am I going to make it or not" when pulling into traffic. You'll be pleased

oh, I'm not trying to say these trucks are bad.

I've been a diehard GM fan since I was a kid and it's the only brand I trust for my trucks.

 

I've owned several 67-72 chevy trucks, did a frame-off restoration on a 71, an 86 k10 LWB, an 88 GMC C1500 W/T, 03 silverado Z71 ECSB, 05 Z71 CCSB, and now this '10 ECSB.

 

This afternoon after work I made a left turn out of my office, the truck shifted at 10-15mph and forced me up the steep hill, my foot buried in the floor for more than 5 seconds, trying to get up to speed, hoping that no one comes over the hill behind me and slams into me.

my 04 ecsb with 4.8 4speed and 3.42's isn gutless. has the factory throttle delay. but i am able to pass just fine. especially on the highway. id kill to have your truck but its not in my budget. you have to get used to it. and people are amazed about my trucks performance. i have simple bolt ons. intake and exhaust no tune. ive spent about $500 on the mods. it doesnt take a lot to give these trucks a little more power

Just do what I did.. get both!! What in the hell were you spending $1000 a month on for a three year old car? No time to just do the work yourself and save some green?

 

Seriously though, I've never really wanted for more guts in my truck. Always seems to get right up and go when I need it to. Certainly quicker than your average family sedan, at least it feels that way. My '92 Corvette however, that thing has a whole other definition of get up and go! Wouldn't want to drive it every day though, that sucker has some serious road noise. Not to mention the suspension, even stiffer than that on my truck.

exactly i had a 91 corvette and had both, but i ditched the corvette over insurance, and something in the ass end was messed up. damn independent rear suspension. and i have a bad knee and it was a bitch to get out of and my friend is 6'6 and couldnt ride in it without me taking the targa top off. these trucks have balls but you have to know where to find them. id much rather have this truck over a vette. and id give my left truck for your new truck youre complaining about

I've looked at buying a 2nd (well for me it would be 3rd car.. but my 2nd car is not drivable and I REALLY dont want to work on it.. family agreement.. long story..) car and not driving the truck every day.

 

I've looked at many things. But I will not be adding a second car payment, so it's gotta be cash, and that limits my purchasing power a good bit.

 

if I got another vette it'd be a c5 or c6. My c6 would spin tires at 70mph.. (don't ask me how I know. )

 

I was going to a special corvette shop about an hour from my office to have all the work done to the car. I managed to get 2 flat tires in that car in the span of 5 months.. costing me $450 a tire to replace them each. The fronts were worn out too and needed replacing but I didn't do it.

 

Honestly right now I'm looking at a little 5 speed prelude to drive to work and back. I'd have to drive it, but I imagine just about anything has more power than this truck seems to.

 

It's not all in my head either. This morning I got shut out by a toyota corolla.. an old one.. because I couldn't get up to speed to get over. Got stuck behind the old guy I'd been trying to get around through the whole ordeal.. poking along..

 

honestly? if I had my way I'd move! find a job where I can keep my current lifestyle on some acreage out in the country where people won't bother me and hellatious commutes are something you see on TV.. instead of your windshield. Then I could keep my truck, accelerate comfortably like I do when I'm alone on the road (the 1 or 2 times that happens.. usually a sunday afternoon when I go to the grocery store..) and woulnd't be posting any of this.

 

but that aint happenin.
