Paint Chip On Hood

I took a long road trip recently and was very happy to arrive home without any damage to the truck. With all that road/bridge construction going on out there I figured I got pretty lucky to walk away unscathed by any rogue pebbles, bad drivers, wildlife, etc. etc.

But wait....I was washing all the dead bugs off of my truck last night when BAM!!! there it was. A tiny little paint chip on my hood. Must have been knicked by a tiny little pebble somewhere along the way. I spend countless hours on my truck trying to keep it looking as it did the day I drove it off the lot. You could say I am pretty anal about those things.

Anyways. I dont believe gmc gives out touch up paint with these vehicles so what is my best option to fix this thing. 90% of people wouldnt notice it but I can spot it from a mile away.

No matter how hard you try to keep it looking new, you can't. You can try and use Dupli-color for the touch up, making it higher than the paint, then use a razer to shave it flat after it's dry. Buff and wax. :P

Just buy some gloss black touch up paint from wal mart or auto parts and touch up that little nick. It'll be 95% less noticeable that way. I, myself, installed a bug deflector on my hood to prevent rock chips there. Touch it up, or over time, it will get worse and worse because rain can now get under it.

Thats another thing. I have the bug deflector installed on mine. It was one of my first projects. But sure enough. As I was travelling down the highway at 70 mph one tiny little stone found its way up and onto my hood and chipped the paint. Ill have to go get that touch up paint before winter.

thanks

It sounds like you may be as anal as I am. I learned how thin and easily GM's paint chips on the GMT900's when I bought my '07. After buying the '08, I had the hood, front bumper, mirror caps, and rock panels from wheel to wheel covered in VentureSheild (3M clear paint protection). You might check it out because chips on these trucks are inevitable and will only become more frequent without some sore of protection.

I got one on top of my hood too even with a bug deflector. It seems like I have been finding chips ever time I wash the truck along the bottom of the doors even with mud flaps. I just use the Victory Red touch up from dupli-color and some Langka. I'm getting pretty good at the Langka with all the practice.

If you are that anal against normal paint wear & tear, you bought the wrong truck. The GMT900 paint is paper thin. Either learn to live with a truck with touch-up paint half fixes or take the truck in & get it resprayed with a good paint job that does not chip so easy. The good news is once you get enough chips, you cab't tell the new ones from the old ones.

Haha yea really. Mine is so chipped up it doesn't even look like on 09 anymore.

just wondering, by well, do you mean it looks unnoticeable after the fix? i have read mixed things about them and went with actual paint myself from http://www.touchuppaintonline.com, plus it was $11 vs. $40 for dr. color chip. i fixed a couple tiny hood chip with some paint on a toothpick and it's pretty near perfect unless you look hard for it.

Maybe that "rock solid" windshield strip does not tell the tale. How about "Full of rock chips"? :seeya:

Take a look at their pictures. It's more than just dabbing some paint on. The procedure they describe works well on chips, not quite as well on long scratches.
