bajakid2 Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Figured i might post this here.. i know its a GM forum but i wanted some Insight on diesel's.... Im looking into getting a diesel around the end of this year, trading in my 07 silverado 1500 for eather a 06-07 or 07-08GMT900 duramax.. my debate is between wanting to get worse gas mpg with the DPF or going with 06-07 duramax preDPF. Then im not sure why but im looking at the 05-07 cummins 5.9's because of their reliability and good mpg, But iv heard they have transmission issues and thats my major reason of leaning towards the duramax for the Allison. if you could pick of these three what would be your choice and why?? thanks for the help!! Travis
gregrocks89 Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 are you using the diesel for anything in particular?
ColoradoSkiCountry Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Indeed, DEF (Fluid) does help things out a bit but let me put in my 2 cents regarding the DPF (Filter) Thus far on my 08 with 22,000 miles it's not been an issue other than the strong smell of diesel when it goes thru a regeneration cycle. Apparently this is quite common. My fuel economy continues to increase slightly as I get more miles put on her. They do sell DPF delete kits if you do some research on them. Talking with a friend who has several RAM 2500 and 3500 Diesels in his fleet, the engines are ok, however they have been having issues with their DPF systems not regenerating right unless you do alot of highway driving. For the slowpoke drivers who don't put their foot into it and keep the RPMs below 2500 they are noticing issues and even the dealer can't do much for it, though supposedly there is a new software update coming out for the RAMs soon to address this issue. They don't notice any issues with the DEF other than having to fill it up about every 8000 miles with the trucks that are equipped with it.
bajakid2 Posted September 13, 2010 Author Posted September 13, 2010 perfect! thanks for all the feedback. I'm considering the diesel for towing my off road truck to the desert frequently and plan on buying a 26 foot enclosed race trailer to haul it out there. I was looking into the new 11's even the fords but im looking to keep my price down considering im upside down a good amount on my current silverado i have now i owe 20k and they are offering me 12-13k for it. Any other down issues i should look out for when buying a used duramax preferably gmt900 07-10? thank you! Travis
TomAlter Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 I will suggest to go for hybrid ones, as most of them are come with very good quality and they also helps our environment a lot.

az'03Silverado Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 Hybrids suck. There's so much more that can go wrong with them. Especially when they get older. p.s.--Woohoo! 1000 replies. I got my 4th wrench!
jro909 Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 you can't go wrong with any duramax really, they are all reliable...they have had what injector problems where as the powerstroke has had massive internal failures, flames shooting out of the pipes and don't forget an incarnation every other year....the cummins is very stout also minus being mated to a russian roulette of a tranny

How does it help the enviroment alot??? What about the enviromental impact from the batteries? Vehicle pollution is nothing compared to the pollution it takes to build all the crap that people buy, plastics and shit. At least the trees and ocean can rejuvenate the air we breathe. People who think they are helping by buying hybrids are stupid, you are insignificant in the scheme of the world. Same with solar panels, you know whats involved in making those things?? Its just another way to make money appealing to the tree huggers so they'll buy vehicles too.
