My cd player in my 04 silverado has finally bitten the dust. Im looking for any tips or suggestions on how i should proceed. Should i try and have the factory one repaired or just go aftermarket? Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

better off aftermarket. cheaper, a lot cheaper and you can get more features

Yeah aftermarket is cheaper but nothing works LIKE OE..... Also, you don't end up with a hand full of butt splices behind a OE radio.......

I would cruise ebay for a OE stereo head unit or consider sending yours off to SPECMO or Speedometer Services Co. I have used Speedometer Services in Georgia to many times to count. With out a problem and they are not out of line priced either.

get aftermarket.. they are uglier and most have obnoxious colors, but they are better. it seems like the 03+ CD player a pieces of shit. the CD player in 03 suburban is broken too

I don't know what exact CD player you have in your 04 but I personally would never replace my OE CD player. No single CD player is better than the 6 CD changer that came from the factory as far as conveniance. Plus, if you have steering wheel controls they won't work anymore with an aftermarket unit. The stock unit has all the controls. I am perfectly satisfied with the BOSE system and 6 CD changer in my truck. Like I said though, I don't know if your truck is equipped the same as mine.

Just a note that if your gonna get a used OE unit that the pre 04? have the Theft-loc

and if its activated and you do not know the unlock code its off to the dealer for a

visit with the Tech 2 machine to unlock it.

If its newer than that the radio is locked to the original vehicles VIN# and won't work

untill you visit your local GM dealer and PAY for a visit with the Tech 2 machine.

IF you decide to go aftermarket check out www.crutchfield.com

They have all the wiring, modules, instructions and other stuff so your aftermarket

unit will work in your truck and still have the chimes and still work the factory controls

(in most cases).

I am sure someone will correct me in the correct years and instructions on the theft-loc

and vin info.

My '00 bit it too. I just think they are poor units in the GMT-800's period. Did like it when it worked though.

I put an aftermarket unit in my truck. I love it. You can get an adapter that connects your stearing wheel controls to the unit. Also a plus side, with a lot of aftermarket units, you can also get bluetooth and iPod capability. Also, an aftermarket unit will be able to supply the speakers with a little bit more power per channel than the O.E. unit would be able to.

Most likely have to get the theft-lock taken off. Visit to the dealership to do it.

If its out of a 05 then its locked to the old trucks VIN#. It will plug/bolt right in to

your truck but a visit to a dealer is necessary and a hook up to the Tech 2 to get

it to work in your truck.

That's what I did. It was headache-free.

But I think aftermarket is the way to go.
