I can see alot uses for a "smart" phone, but not sure if I need one? What's every ones input?

It would be nice to have the internet for that occasional phone number look up, address look up, directions, email, and online photos. The use of the navigator or similar apps would be nice too.

But is that worth the extra $30 a month?

get one of the in between smart phones like the lg env touch or the samsung rogue from Verizon, they only cost 10 bucks for internet and its perfect for looking up an address or phone number

NOOOOOO

The enV Touch is horrible!! Biggest POS Ever. Actually, I think my wifes Rogue is even worse... but the verdicts still out on that one

These "multi-media" phones are all junk. They're made for teenagers who just want a fad phone and don't care if its a piece of crap that freezes up, shuts off, and doesn't work most of the time.

If you're going to get a smart phone, get a real smart phone... not a fisher price toy. Learn from my mistake.

absolutely not. i just got this phone:

samsung rugby 2- one of those military spec phones. it has mobile internet, gps, live traffic, directions, i can get the att navigation for it (as oppose to the mapquest type directions i use on it) for 10 bucks a month (but i have a garmin for that), youtube, etc. it has everything my fiancees iphone has except those dumb time waste game apps and "real" internet. it was also only 25 bucks on amazon wireless. i also check my e-mail and bank accounts and facebook from time to time. it is slower, but it gets the job done.

and ive dropped it in a river, covered it in mud while quadding, dropped it on concrete and it still works like brand new. i dont see a smart phone handling that (true story actually- my fiancees screen cracked for apparently no reason while she was using it. apple was kind enough to replace the whole phone for free though).

also take into account the initial cost of the phone when calculating just how much more it is. i have a computer at home, it isnt worth it to me to have all that extra fluff.

I'm in the same boat (kind of). I have an Iphone 3g that I tried to unlock. I wasn't successful so I'm thinking about buying a smart phone cash out right and adding service. The main reason is because I don't want the 2 year agreement + I love to mod things.

So I've been looking at a few unlocked phones from HTC that can run the latest droid software. I'll let you know how that goes.

Well, it's either the Droid 2 or the Samsung Reality. But from everything I read, the 9.99 data charge just isn't enough and you might as well get the 30.00 data charge to use it efficiently. But If I go that much, I might as well go for the Droid and have SOO Much more.

I am in the same quandry and just looked at the Droids on Friday. Friend swears by his droid x and is pushing me that way. I have nav in all 3 cars so don't need that, except last week nav in my 08 BMW didn't have a street where houses were built in 2005?

Does store a lot of music and has an 8 megapixel camera which I would use so probably get one when I get back from vacation.

Unless something better comes out by nov. (when my upgrade is due) the droid x will be my next phone.

I think you pretty much nailed it right there. Very nice features, but only you can see a need or not. Personally, I prefer to unplug when away from the desk... but I'm in front of a computer too much as it is. No way I'm taking one with me. The day that I "need one", I'll look at it... but that day hasn't even peeped around the corner yet. Also, and this is a big one for me... I won't carry anything that won't fit in my pocket comfortably and that I don't have to worry about breaking if I forget about it while working. If I'm not carrying it, what use is the phone? Keep in mind... I don't even text... so you may want to just ignore my simple way of thinking.
