Clear Coat Peeling On Factory 20's

Anyone have any issues with the clear coat coming off on the factory aluminum wheels? Mine is peeling around the outer rim and around, inner part where the center cap is, and a few other places on different parts of the wheel. I thought I remember reading a thread about this on here but cannot find it. I remember some people had there wheels replaced under warranty. My dealer is trying to blame it on the tire shop that put on my tires, which I know is B/S.

Yes, there have been several people having this issue, some have gotten new wheels, and I have heard of some dealers offering to have them refinished under warranty. My dad's rims are getting this way too (OEM 17's), but there isn't a whole lot of point in getting a new set of rims just to have them get crapped up in another year or so.

I am of the opinion that the best remedy is to have the wheels professionally refinished and have GM pay for it under warranty. That's what they usually offer anyway. If they replace the wheels, you will get the same crappy product and have the same problems with them in a few months.

My stock 17's (steel rims) are flaking and rusty on 2, of course I didn't think to notice it until the warrenty was out.

Next set of tires I'm getting the rims powder coated black like cop trucks and putting chrome center caps on it, I like that look.

They will warranty them. Get another dealer if they are being difficult. Now you know the difference between a bad dealership and a good one.

One of my 09 20's, when I purchased the truck had a bubble in it.

It was very hard to see when just washing the truck but when I waxed the wheels I noticed the one had a bubble about the size of a quarter.

Wheel was replaced under warranty and I haven't had any issues since.

(Those that don't know, the wheels are made in China)

Now, why would someone bring up a trivial detail like this? Harborfreight sells the highest quality tools money can buy. Why would someone doubt the high quality of Chinese made wheels? :)

So.................The PYO 16 inch alloys on the 2500s are made by Alcoa

in Hungary! Plainly stamped on the face under the center cap!

In this day and age, with all the chemicals that are being sprayed on the roads in the winter and such.. well ya'll know. It is murder on our trucks. Yes blah blah blah GM needs to have better quality control.

I live in new england and am trying a new approach to the road salt they use so heavily. I bought one of those pump up garden sprayers that holds abuot 2 gallons. I thought about spraying down my rims when I get home on those snow days with warm water. Not sure this will do much, but I can't run our garden hose during the winter so this was my best alternative.

If you want to protect the wheels and do not care what they look like, get a can of CRC corrosion inhibitor, sold in many auto parts stores, and spray all over rims and let dry. It has wax like consistency, yellowish in color, but does a fantastic job protecting metal. It is just like rustproofing stuff they used years ago 9Ziebart company for example). I am considering spraying it on my truck rims to protect tham from ocean salt spray around here.

I sprayed this stuff on the bottom inner edges of doors. It completely seals any entry point for water and prevents corrosion.

My 17" OEM wheels had very tiny chips in the clear-coat. I was approaching 36k on the odo, so I took it to the dealership and showed it to them. I told them that it's not that bad now, but what about a year from now? Dealership agreed and my wheels are currently being refinished as we speak. Only 3 wheels had chips, but they are doing all 4 so they will match. They said it was caused from the road salt.

Let's see. I have a three year old truck with:

1. New interior

2. Re-finished wheels

3. New bodyside molding

I'm putting together a brand-new truck piece by piece :driving:
