Orange Peel Has Me Thinking

Stopped at a dealership yesterday to take another look at a Storm Gray CC. I already ordered one and just trying to make sure that is the color I still wanted.

 

It was a cloudy, rainy day and the orange peel showed up terribly. Now I am thinking about switching to silver before they build my truck. Arggg. Back in 05, when I bought my corvette, I chose silver for this very reason. Doesn't seem that GM has gotten any better with paint.

 

How does your paint look?

i am happy with my paint though- all ive got are some stone chips in the front and some pinstripes down the sides from some branches that havent penetrated the clear coat. all i see is blue all around.

Serious? Orange peel is small repeating waves in the paint. Looks bumpy

Orange peel is what it sounds like, the paint looks like a shiny orange peel. Caused by the clear not laying down completely flat, therefore not reflecting light perfectly. Solution is to wet sand the clear and polish. They say because of the newer enviromental orientated paints orange peel has got worse. Every new vehicle has it, from the very top all the way down.

orange peel, can be fixed .. and isnt very expensive - $200-500 for whole car, all u need to find is a good detailer that knows what they are doing..

 

dont let this discourage you from buying. everything is okay, they just rushed with the finishing polish.

Look at the peel of an orange, then look at your paint at different angles in the direct sunlight. You will see it!

 

GM is notorious for this on their vehicles

If someone only quotes you $200-$500 to do it, run away. Chances are they are not a good detailer!

When wet sanding paint you must use ultra fine sandpaper, something like 1200 0r 2000 grit. Otherwise scratches will show after polishing.

When a customer complains about this we usually contract a 'professional detailer' to come and polish the car, the wet sand isnt 100% necessary, takes the individual about 3-4 hours max. and 100% orange peel free.. We dont pay our detailers 200-500 a car, we pay them around $150. but in our market we see their labor alot cheaper. again wet sanding isnt necessary.

well thanks guys for the clarification! makes sense, i can see where the name comes from. with that, cant say ive experienced this. and i wash and polish my truck by hand. ive never seen that before and it isnt on my truck thats for sure.

Both of your trucks most certainly have orange peel, all factory vehicles do. It's not a flaw or anything wrong with the paint, its just the way it is. I wouldn't dream of wet sanding and polishing a pick up truck to get rid of orange peel anyways.
