FYI if your secondary latch is causing difficulty try this. Read owner's manual and try those instructions first (specifically for secondary latch). Then this is what I had to do.

Loosen cable as much as it will drop (maybe 3" until 2nd latch holds). Jack up on the rim of the spare. This slack should allow slipjoint pliers to push on 2nd latch button. Spare is now free. Remove one bolt holding hoist to truck. Cut the 2nd latch strike off. Remount hoist and return spare on cable. Crank up spare snug (two clicks) and check from time to time (give it a kick when filling gas tank).
