Navigation Parts And Headunits

I have read what seems like a few hundred posts about adding navigation to NBS trucks. What I haven't found is what I would need to install it into my type of truck.

If you guys could give me a hand I would appreciate it.

I have a 2007 1500 Crew Cab Z71 Silverado. I have the CD player with XM and I have steering wheel controls.. I do not have not have Bose.

I know there are a lot of different part numbers for head units and I would like to know which ones will work with my setup/what I would like.

I am looking for a Nav unit with XM that will let me use my steering wheel controls. DVD/bluetooth/usb are not a must but would be nice.

It used to be that people thought most of the units had to have a Bose system.... That isn't the case anymore?

How much does it cost to have the new head unit programmed? Does anyone know of a good tech in Northern Colorado?

Anyone that can chime in on this would be appreciated.

From what I understand you need the head unit, nav antena and vss harness. You should be able to get the unit programed for your truck. It doesn't matter if it's bose or not.

You can buy an adapter that will let you install an aftermarket head unit and keep your steering wheel controls and blinker/chime sounds. It plugs into the wiring harness between the head and the truck. Any good automotive audio installer should be able to hook you up. If you don't already have BOSE, you are better off with aftermarket than factory and it's cheaper too... Non-bose trucks DO NOT have the required amp for factory nav units and, while the unit may plug in and turn on, your audio volume will be very low!

This isn't true. The volume / chime issues can be solved by having a dealer that knows what they are doing program it. If the problem persists after programming, the dealer didn't know what they were doing. Units from 2007-2011 trucks will work in your vehicle. You can also use a unit from a LAMBDA platofrm vehicle (Acadia, Enclave, Outlook ETC) although the lights will be a different color than your dash. Bluetooth isn't controled by the OEM unit, so if you don't have blue tooth now, you won't when you instal the unit. Any other features you have now (XM, steering wheel controls, ETC) you should still have after instal.

I would be considering adding the Nav to my '07 Sierra, however a few questions:

1. Currently I have the SLT Bose system, XM/CD/DVD (w/ ceiling-mounted screen), so it should be plug and play?

2. When playing a DVD, does it appear on the dash screen (when in park) AND ceiling screen?

3. I have done the BT upgrade; does the phone info appear on the OEM nav units? Is anything from the BT system tied into the nav unit?

4. If I pick up a OEM nav unit, I would just need the nav antenna and VSS cable? Is it just plug and play? Where does the VSS cable plug from/to?

5. If I get a 2010 model with USB, is it just a matter of running a standard USB cable to the glove box? or no?

I'm looking at OEM if I can get one for a decent price. i realize there are aftermarket options, but I'd like to keep everything (incl BT and mic) on the on-board system.

example: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2007-2008-2009-GMC-...=item2c5eaf84f8

Thanks........

You can do the factory GM navi and you'll have to get override modules to do address entry and video in motion ($250), add a USB module ($100), nav antenna ($60), navi disc when time to upgrade ($200) and STILL not have as much as the Advent will do out of the box - and it plugs and plays with or without BOSE. Do a search on the forum - you'll find out what it will do (which is far more than the factory can do even if you threw every aftermarket adaptor and option at it...)

Honestly, I've been installing car audio for 35 years and have never seen a unit do as much in a GM environment without having to give up any of the features that you'd expect from the best aftermarket units.

For $1000, nothing touches it...

Yes well thank you, but that's not really answering my questions about the OEM device. I mentioned that I was aware of aftermarket options.

Does the Advent allow the steering controls and voice commands with the BT system? (hangup/pick up calls) How "seemless" is this? And if it is, then why is there an external mic? I did the BT upgrade on my 07 and think its the best thing since sliced bread and would want to keep it.

And judging from the website there is no dealer even close to me in Canada.

I didn't necessarily want to rag on the factory navi, just explain what the differences are and what it would cost to get the same functionality as is available in the Advent.

You do have voice dialing on the Advent, although you'll need to touch the screen to initiate it (for now - they may have a firmware update down the road that will transfer that function to the wheel). And remember, if you DON'T want to use the Advent Bluetooth, keep the factory one - it doesn't override it; but A2DP streaming audio via Bluetooth is pretty cool, and the factory unit won't do it. The factory Bluetooth doesn't give you phonebook capability either...

The reason for the external mic is that the embedded Bluetooth is the latest chipset from Parrot (good thing), so it is mated to a Parrot mic.

And lastly, we are located in Seattle. I have an installer that works in Bellingham every week. If you gave me call, we could have you meet up with Kirk to do the job just about anywhere between Bellingham and Everett...

I personally would have loved it if the OGM1 used the OEM mic but I would guess that another reason they couldnt do this is that onstar is an option so not every GM will have it which would limit their customer base.

I have to go with Walt, I think the OEM thing would be nice but they never make it easy. The advent looks factory so I think we get the best of both worlds. It isnt perfect but what out there is.

I have a 2011 with Bose. I just went through the purchase process for a NAV unit. I ended up with the factory 2011 unit with USB. The aftermarket units were slow to boot up, the nav screens do not have the factory look which I prefer, I lost some button functionality. With some units, the satelite radio box had to be changed.

Although the aftermarket units are indeed very good, the installers are overly agressive in selling the units and spend far too much time running down the factory option. In the end the factory unit is very competitive. I installed a Gen 6 Lockpick and about $180. This gave me address entry on the move and playing DVD on the move.

In my case the OEM factory NAV unit came in a kit with all wiring, antenna, NAV head. The install was plug and play. All factory functionality worked as delivered. The OEM unit was less costly than a Kenwood for an example.

So after everything you got was said and done, what did you end up paying?

Ive got a 07 sierra 1500. Just purchased a vcim for the bluetooth and im looking into the nav unit. Will the nav unit play nice with the vcim, which I believe is from a 2010?

Not being able to play a dvd on the move was a deal breaker for me but it looks like the lockpick address this.

1 dumb question about the factory nav. Im assuming your able to use the navigation without having an onstar subscription correct?
