i want to swap out my 4.8 for a 6.0 but before i put it in i want to do any and all upgrades to atleast get me to 450hp range what do you guys suggest i was thinkin a cam dont really want to go with a supercharger or turbo. It will be my daily so i cant get to wild

I'm doing the same with my 6.0, I'm going with a 224 cam and 853 heads, I should have a write-up with pics done by the end of thanksgiving holidays. But, if you can afford to, 243 heads would be the best gm heads for that engine. The truck engine is pretty much the best flowing intake other than the fast 90 with costs too much, IMO. The ls6 intake is a good choice if you plan on reviong to 7k often.

A) 450 at the crank, or at the wheels?

B) What are your end-goals. 450 horsepower is easily attained with a LQ4/LQ9, but a track truck has different needs than a truck that needs to pull a boat/ATV/Horse trailer from time to time.

Headers and cam...Then a stall if you really want to shoot out of the hole :P

Yup... higher "horsepower" comes at the expense of low-end torque when adjusting cam profiles. I'll take low-end torque any day, but I tow (and don't race).

799 or 243 heads. Stock truck intake. Ported stock throttle body. Long tube headers and dual 2.5 or 3" exhaust with aerochamber mufflers. 220ish range cam I like LSL or EPS lobes Id stay away from XER's for dd use. Probably need new injectors and a good single pump like racetronix or the like. A GOOD tune not some mail order crap. 2800 stall or so. That'll make her rock and roll damn fiercly and still be very street friendly. 114+2 on the cam btw maybe +4 to help your bottom end torque. PAC 1518 valve springs and some new hardened/chromo pushrods. Upgrade to Katech rod bolts and a new oil pump while your at it. This set up will scream safely to 7K RPM and still have all kinds of grunt down low.

i would like at least 400hp to the wheels it would be more for racing than anything i dont tow or haul anything would it be easier just dropping a vette motor into the truck or just to build a 6.0lq4 i do know i will need a cam and a stall at the least and of course a tune

400 whp with a 6.0 is very doable na. You have two approaches depending on budget. Aftermarket heads, or stock heads. If you run aftermarket heads like a stage 2 LS6 or some L92's then you can run a more civilized cam as mentioned above around a 224 would be perfect. If you wish to simply re-use stock heads on a budget build where peak performance is your only goal then jump up to a 240 or so LSL or XER cam and it wont be all that civilized but she'll make that number.

2001 silverado364 im still interseted to see what your outcome is let me know how it goes vvt thanks for the advice ill probably swap out the heads just so i can have a civilized dd truck until provoked hahahaahaha :mad:

If you decide to go for heads you can really dial in your combo exactly how you want it. I would simply set a hp goal and go for a custom grind cam. PatrickG over at LS1tech does this for 30 bucks ( the cost of the cam is the same ) and then your combo will give you exactly what you want plus hes always savvy to the latest lobe designs and whos making the best grinds etc. I bought an EPS custom grind spec'd through him for my 6.2L VVT build that should hit 450 whp cam only so to shoot for 400 whp with a head/cam 6.0L will be a breeze. Happy building

    • have you stuck with dealer oil changes since then? I made the same switch after getting tired of crawling around under the truck, but I’ve found some dealers are way better than others about getting you in quickly. Curious if yours has been good about scheduling or if you’ve had to look elsewhere for quicker turnaround.
    • Thank you.   I am set on a 3.0 Duramax as my previous truck with a Ford Ecoboost had just as many, if not more, "common" issues.  Cam phasers, timing chain issues, 10-speed valve body and CDF drum, emissions issues, etc.  So I figured, why not get 2x the fuel mileage (these things got 27+mpg on every mixed city/highway test drive I put them through) and better towing capability with resale value to boot?   My minimum, shortest trip will be 50 miles 1-way and I regularly go out of state with a travel trailer.  I'm planning on using this for a marketing/event promotion business also, which would require regular towing of trailers for bands, DJs, sound and lighting gear, along with my personal camera gear for filming events.   Looked at other trucks in the $30k+ price range but the issues seem to be everywhere, plus too many with gaudy mods.  I'm literally sticking with RWD trucks because they tend to be actually used as trucks, vs. the 4x4 models I've seen with unsafe lifts, huge tires, and general mods that would affect reliability (I'm wondering if some of them were tuned, hence the aggressive throttle response and hard shifting).   So my goal is to find a stock, 3.0 with 1 or 2 owners, in good physical condition, and decently well maintained.  Can't seem to find that up here, everything in the $27-30k range has had multiple owners, smoke smell, issues, or body damage.  Or the ridiculously modified trucks with 80k miles for under $27k but lots of problems...
    • That’s pretty tough Grumpy. I reread the previous few posts. They all reference oil changes. Much like your last thread. In my humble opinion it keeps things interesting.
    • Engine Wear and ISO 4406   1.) Cold Starts. 2.) High Particle Count. 3.) Low operating temperature viscosity and high low temperature cranking viscosity. 4.) Depleted AW, Friction and Acid packages.  5.) High engine load.    https://me.caltexlubricants.com/en_me/home/learning/from-chevron/heavy-duty-diesel-vehicles-and-equipment/The-Importance-of-Clean-Engine-Oil-and-Its-Impact-on-Equipment-and-Business-Performance.html   High particle counts have five sources. 1.) They are manufactured within the engine. Both wear debris and amalgamation of degradation products and combustion driven soot (worse in GDI). 2.) They are ingested via intake air. Ever hear the best oil filter is a good air filter? 3.) They are entrained in the fuel. 4.) This one is insidious. They are introduced in 'fresh oil'. 5.) They are introduced during the oil change.   ISO 4406 is the test that measures and quantifies the combine effects of all of the above particle related issues. You can mitigate your way into multiples of engine life by being attentive to them all.    https://www.hyprofiltration.com/blog/is-new-oil-clean   (from the link above)    [Quote] What Is the Recommended ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code for New Oil?   A good upper limit for new oil cleanliness is 16/14/11 (ISO 4406). Typical new oil usually has ISO codes of 19/17/15 or worse, which is far too dirty for sensitive components. This can be a major cause of degradation and premature failure.
