Gm Powered Cummins Generator

Today at work we got to fire up the new generator that we recently installed as part of a LEED certified electrical upgrade / renovation we are working on.

 

It's a cummins genset powered by a GM 8.1 L turbocharged engine running on natural gas producing 150 kilowatts. At full load the exhaust and turbo were glowing red. It was pretty cool to see. Wish I would have taken a picture or two.

 

Interesting to see a Gm engine used to power a building rather than a truck.

A dredge that work on in the summer has a GM 12cyc diesel in it. A lot of Tow boats on the Rivers have 1200hp + diesels in them that are made by GM

Under full load, a properly operating generator should not have the Turbo(s) glowing red. Not good. Or so am I told.

It was during the initial commissioning of the generator with the cummins technician standing right next to it. At least he told us it was normal and running within safe operating temperatures! Who knows if he was full of it. Though I did a little research and apparently it's normal for cummins generators to run that way.

Just does not seem right. Running red hot like that is just asking for a turbo bearing failure.
