Wierd Clunk

Had this clunk in the rear end starting after a tire rotation. Jacked up the back end and when I grab the tire I can pull the tire and it makes the clunk . It feels like there is 1/8 inch of play in the wheel. All the lugs are torqued down so I know that is not the problem. It almost feels like the drum has some play in it. Anyone have any idea of where to start? Should I be pulling the drum?

i have the same problem....trying to figure if its in the body mounts or the rear end....sometimes it feels like the thump is under my seat which would likely be the body mounts and sometimes it feels like the thump is from the rear leaf spring.

 

my rear axle has lateral play which i think is normal to an extent

 

i have an apt at the dealer monday so we will see

Ye stock wheels and never thought but wheel bearing could definitely be a possibility. Will have to look into that. Snarkee let me know what the result of your appointment is. I went over to the dealer here yesterday to see if one of their mechanics could just jack it up and let me know what they thought but they said they would have to put it on the hoist and charge me $20 for the inspection fee. He said they would check it at my next oil change for free so I decided to wait.

Any results after your appointment with the dealer?

Any full floating axle will have some end play in the axle shafts, its necessary.

 

Check for possible body mount issues by removing one body mount bolt at a time and driving the vehicle.

Ye I understand that but this is not normal. At slow speeds (ie backing out of my driveway, going over speed bumps, etc) I have a fairly loud clunk noise and its hard to tell where it is coming from. Only thing I can think of that I have recently done is got my truck undercoated. Don't know if the oil spray may have done something...

 

I may try and get a video of the noise at the wheel and possibly the noise when going over a bump tonight. My buddy is coming over and maybe having someone outside the vehicle will allow me to hear where exaclty the noise is coming from.

Cab Sierra. Same noise and I did the same thing,

Truck undercoating. It didn't do it before the undercoating job, hmmmmmmmmm......

That's really wierd. I'm wondering if the oil in the undercoating is causing something to slip. What I don't know but seems wierd. I had my buddy listen outside my truck and he could really tell where it was coming from. I'm not to worried about something breaking but it's annoying as hell to listen hear it!

i took it into the dealership last week and they said that they couldn't find anything. They said that the suspension and brakes were all fine. i'm thinking that its the bed making the noise. I know they dropped the spare tire and spayed under there. Maybe the bed and the frame or some other 2 parts that move just gets sticky and makes the noise when the rub agaisnt each other. I know that the day it was sprayed it didn't make any noises. It was only after it dried out that it started.

Good to know. Mine was the same. It didn't start for a couple days. Will just let it play out I guess. Thanks for the info!

I took it to the dealer in the rain and the noise could not be heard.

 

They lubed my body mounts and the noise has not returned in the past 5 days.

 

Mine started after the undercoating as well.
