Broken Wheel Lug

I found a broken wheel lug on my right rear wheel yesterday! ???

This happened to anyone on the 99-2002 model 1500's before?

Not knowing if you intalled the lug with a torque wrench or a tire store did with an air gun, I would guess the tire store. They crank down at much higher than specified torques, many times. I have stripped or broken a few on ATVs with an electric one, and have since gone back to a regular torque wrench.

I torqued them down to 110 ft. lbs. with a "clicker" torque wrench.

The owners manual has 120 ft. lbs. in the "capacities" section.  I didn't know if that was the rating or the recommended torque.

I have always used 100 ft. lbs. on aluminum rims in the past and figured the larger tires might require more torque?

I put them on about 3-4 weeks ago.

What should they be torqued at?

since you used a torque wrench last time, i would guess it was damaged before that. were you able to run it down with you fiingers until it hit the wheel(wheel on hub completely)?

Yup!  BTW, it is an '02 that I bought June 24, 2002.  I have almost 4k miles on it.

Don't feel bad....On my maxima, in the year I have had it, I've had 4 broken wheel lugs :D and no it has nothing to do with it being an import...it's the idiots at the dealership that torque them to #### tight!

I used 110 ft.lbs. Is  that too much

I think the manual (check it out) states 140 N*M

If you used 110 ft.lbs that would equal 149.6 N*M (which is to much)  To go from pound foot to newton per meter multipy by 1.36 (found number in my machine design book)

Nothing wrong with an impact wrench if you use a torque stick. The white stick (7/8") says 120 lb/ft. on it. Works well

and keeps the rotors true.

Have a great one!
