meade01 Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I have a 2005 silverado 4x4 with the 4.8 and have thinking about swapping it out for a 5.3 or maybe even a 6.0. What I would like to know is will either of these engines bolt right up or are there some changes involved ex. transmission or wiring?
L8er Brah Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 What was said here. The only thing that you need to change is get a new tune for the truck because the 6.0 will not run with a 4.8 tune. These are anywhere from 250 buck to 500. All you have to do is find you pcm and remove it from the truck ship it to someone or have someone local put a new tune in for you.
[email protected] Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Yep, use all existing wiring and stuff. Go to eBay and find a 6.0l ecm for around 100 bucks and you'll have power out the ass then.

It would be advisable to update your tune for the new motor to optimize it, but it's not required. as for the actual motor swap, it's a direct bolt in. All you need is the long block. A 6.0L, depending on what it comes out of will need your stock flexplate and oil block off plate swapped over from the 4.8L. all accessories will bolt right up. Sometimes the 6.0L will tear up the 4L60e transmission, sometimes not. If it does a good rebuild of the transmission with a few performance upgrades will be just fine for most people.
[email protected] Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Just make sure it's an 01-up lq4. The 99-00 had iron heads and an incompatible crank for the stock 4l60 in your truck.
nickvrebel Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 correct on the iron heads/ crank issue. if you get a 6.0L the motor you will want will have aluminum heads - if it was mounted previously to a 4L80e then it will have a spacer on the end of the crankshaft behind the flexplate that will need to be removed before installing a 4L60e flexplate.
