Have a friend with a Craftsman 2hp 4gal compressor that he's willing to sell me for $100.  The Craftsman club catalog has either a 6hp 30 gal vertical or 33 gal horizontal which includes a 3/8 impact and 3/8 ratchet for $285 each.  I don't due too much tinkering, so the compressor would likely be used to blow out filters, inflate tires, maybe take off the rims to do the shocks on the truck in a few weeks.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

That'll be sufficient and the price is about right.

I think mine is a 5hp, 25 gall Crapsman and I have mine going 24/7 and I do heavy stuff with it.

That sounds like a reasonable price.  I've got a 6 hp 33 gal Craftsman.  I use it at least once a week to blow the water from my grille and mirrors on the truck after wash.  Handy to have airtools, especially working on suspension pieces.   :thumb:

I saw those 2 in the craftsman club thing and was thinking about getting one of them but still kind of pricey! I am not sure what size I have now, but its not enough, my impact wrench drains the tank too fast, I am looking to just find an old water tank or something to use as an aux air tank, but no luck yet!

I've been looking into it also, as I have definite need for one working on the vehicles, and also on the house.

Here's a place, epinions.com, that at least has some info on comparisons, although you kinda need to take their customer reviews w/ a grain of salt.

Air Compressor Reviews

May be some useful info there.  :uhoh:

BTW, I think many, if not all the Craftsman compressors are actually made by Porter Cable.

We have an old 1HP 12 Gallon craftsman that works great.  However it is kinda old and recently the tank developed a small hole so it leaks slightly.  Still works great but it is on its last leg

Always remember to bleed the water out of the bottom of your compressor every so often... I recall a certain 30 gallon compressor in my auto class in high school that had a small hole, but we were informed not to worry about it... needles to say that hole just happened to be the only place the rust had made it all the way through... As we later found out after a major explosion of rusted metal out the bottom of the thing; the decay of the metal was much more severe than the small hole that we took for granted. Luckily, no-one was near the thing when it finally said "Fu*k this..."

Most now have a screw open valve at the bottom to bleed it.  I never have, but I should.  I just never think of it.  But since I use it enough and use it hard, the water/condensation just goes out through the air lines anyway.  Which is good reason to use air tool oil whenever you hook up impact wrenches and such.

4gal is kinda small.  I say hold out till you have enough money to get one w/ a bigger tank.  4gal is more of a portable size.

I have an 8gal Devilbliss that I found in the Penny Saver for $100, just like new!

Allrighty, I'm going with a larger unit, but a Craftsman or a Husky(which I believe is made by Campbell Hausfield)?  Opinions/thoughts?  Here are the details:

Craftsman is a 6hp 30 gal 150 psi max 8.4/6.8scfm with impact, ratchet, and hose for $285

Husky had a 5hp 22 Gal vertical 125 psi max 6.5/5.1scfm with impact, 6 piece socket, ratchet, spray gun, air chisel, 25' hose, 5 male plugs, 1 female plug, female coupler, teflon tape, oil, air chuck, blow gun, and tire gauge for $299

Leaning towards the Craftsman I think.  Uses would be removing rims, blowing out filters, etc...impact gun, blow gun, air chuck, tire gauge would be the main accessories.
