I want to paint my stock silver rims black and i cant afford powder coating right now,i was told to use engine paint, and that patio paint from krylon.the rattle can will have to do for now.they look good on those dps suvs.has anybody done it this way?

If you're gonna use a rattle can, I'd recommend brake caliper paint. But krylon and rustoleum are damn good paints to, I wouldn't recommend dupli-color as I don't like it. The hardest part would be making it stick to the factory finish, I'd imagine there would be a good amount of sanding and whatnot involved to get down to bare metal.

I've seen it done with good results, but Powder coating them is better and not as expensive as you'd think. Around $25 per wheel.

It would hold up better I'd think for the longer haul.

I guess it depends on where you live. About $75 per wheel is the norm around here...of course that's for chrome 20's.

Op, my dad and I painted some alloy wheels on one of my 4-wheelers back when I was a kid. We used some automotive grade paint with a gun and cleared them. They held up very well.

I would think that powder coating or painting a chrome plated wheel would require de-chroming first. Either the wheel would have to be taken to a plating shop to have it done or lots of hand work like grinding and sanding to remove the chrome so that new paint will adhere properly.

Stock GM wheels that are silver in color are painted with a clear coat finish. A good wheel re-finishing kit like the one that Eastwood sells will strip off the old finish and you can then prep the wheel for repainting. Aircraft paint stripper works good too.

Sandblasting them will remove everything and where I live you could have 4 20" rims powdercoated for $200. Thats all prep work from start to finish.

on my lightning i painted the wheels white. very easy and can be done in a weekend. you dont have to snad to bare metal, just scuff enough to take the shine off....all of it. then you can start with the painting. i painted my wheels white at first i used the engine paint clear coat but every can had a problem of drying with a yellow haze so i used regular clear. looked great lasted about a year until i sold the truck. here is a link. i have pics and some vids so you can see just about every angle of the wheels.

if you have any questions shoot me a PM. oh also a time saver, instead of taping the tires off...index cards work great and save alot of time.
