Drunk Driver Hit My Truck

Well, got back to my apartment late last night, so im sitting at my desk and I hear my local police department go out on my scanner for a motor vehicle collision right where I parked my truck...So i start thinking, oh shit as i get my shoes on. I walk out of my apt, and see the lights, as I walk around the corner, sure as hell, theres my truck, sitting about 3 feet off the curb from where I parked it. Knowing some of the local cops in my area being a firefighter, start talking to them and they tell me it was a drunk driver, hit my truck, so hard that it moved the rear end 3 feet from the curb and pushed my truck into the car in front of me, must have been doing at least 40 on a 25mph road in the middle of a city. After he hit me the guy backed up and in trying to leave, hit my tuck again. As he pulled out the cops came and boxed him in and cuffed him on the spot. Thank god he didnt get away and his insurance will pay for everything but im still pissed as hell...and on top of it they found a beer in the center console of his car...

Grille guard on the front of the truck got bent but saved the front bumper at least

Heres the damage

Oh dang man... That totally sucks! Sorry. On the good side, he didn't get away. Thank god for the hitch or it would/could have been worse.

That's assuming his ass even has insurance!

It looks like it didn't do too much exterior damage. How did the brushguard hold up?

Brushguard didnt fare too well, the only reason i got it on there in the first place is to keep people from backing into the bumper in the city i park in. But it did save the front bumper here.

It really is a lot of superficial damage even tho this guy was definately moving pretty fast when he hit me

Frame looks all ok, definately going to need a new trailer hitch, rear bumper components, probably tailgate and bedside panel is pretty crumpled as well as some scratches on the taillight.

But it still sucks, we all spend all this time taking care of our trucks and it takes one person with no judgement the mess it all up.

What just pisses me off the most is there was a glass full of beer in the center console of his car....and the fact he tried to leave

He does have insurance luckily, my buddy who was one of the cops on scene told me that much at least before they all picked up

Too bad. I must say that is one of the nicest trucks I've seen. Love those wheels. Are those gmc 20's painted black?

Thanks man

Yup they're gmc 20's powder coated black. Actually bought them like that off one of the guys here on the forum, took them off his truck and powder coated them and never even mounted tires on them after the powder coating

It's an even better thing that you weren't still in the truck when it happened. I also betcha that they find a lot more stuff wrong than what you have mentioned. Bunch of stuff underneath, sheet metal and mounts. Seen this happen a lot and glad to hear "this one" had insurance. Usually they don't.

Was also wondering, if you are a firefighter, why is your avatar a thin blue line?

Oh yea im sure too, but I got under the truck and the frame looks ok, thats all im really worried about, everything else can just be replaced under his insurance. And it drives ok too, wheels straight, no drifting, no vibrations.

The fact that it was raining out also helped out to reduce the damage, instead of sitting there taking the brunt, my truck slid forward on the slick road pretty far absorbing some of the damage

Well my avatars a thin blue line currently in memory of Ocean Gate,NJ Officer Jason Marles killed by a drunk driver Nov 24th

Yea. I mean it did the job of protecting the bumper but im going to need a new one, where it is mounted to the frame of the truck got bent out. The guards like that arent really meant to hold up to large collisions, I just have one on there to mount my emergency lights to and so when the people who cant drive back into my truck on the street, they wont scratch the hell outta my bumper, and in that case its saved me multiple times.

Heres a pic of the damage to the grille guard

That piece is soppused to be straight against the recovery hook but it and the entire right hand side of the guard got torqued out, yes it did save the chrome bumper piece but only by like a quater of an inch

that blows. That guy has to be lucky the cops were the first ones to the scene! Thankfully sounds like this may be a responsible person making a dumb decision as at least he had insurance.
