Air Intake

Hello, I recently bought a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. I want to get a cold air intake and was thinking about the K&N 63 series. I was wondering what the best brand is though. I've heard AEM is good too but I want the best performance and I'm leaning towards the K&N because of its warranty. Any advice would be great, thanks.

I used to add aftermarket intakes to my vehicles. After mucho reading on the subject I decided to go back to the stock air box. There is much argument in the filtering capabilities of K&N filters and many others. I believe the stock flows more than enough and the only advantage of a cold air intake is at WOT or close to it where the engine is needing maximum air and can capitalize on the extra flow and give you that extra 2hp.

Also the stock draws air from a void in the quarter panel which is much cooler than air in the engine bay, although i admit i dont know where the K&N draws air from. For longevity of my engine i chose excellent proven filtration over a minimal hp increase and cool sound.

Not trying to burst your bubble, you can do whatever you choose. You can always use the aftermarket CAI and put a good amsoil cone filter on it or something that is a non oiled type and filters very well.

i would never risk my engine/components for some sound...if i want sound i'll roll the window down and fart out the window

Save your money and buy something else, CAI are nothing but a waste of money with zero gains.

I don't understand all the hate for a CAI? What specifically does it hurt allowing more air in?

Because the stock setup is actually pretty good on the GM's. CAI's have there place on some vehicles but from a performance aspect you can do just as well with a $45 drop in than a complete $300+ kit.

 

The only time they significantly reduce intake air temp is if you are barely moving. But once you start heading down the road I would say you are sucking ambient temperature air in under a minute anyways due to the shear volume of air entering the intake tube. For example, how long does it take a fan to start cooling you off when you turn it on and stand in front of it. That is exactly what it is like inside of an intake tube.

Performance intake. The description I read said nothing about lowering intake temps.

ok so my question is this then, what is everyone opinions on a performance intake? Not the cold air intake. My apologies for the confusion from the first queston.

My opinion is on post #7. You already bought the stock intake and it will perform just as well as a $300 aftermarket setup. Plus you can rinse out the engine bay without risking getting the filter wet. The only thing I would be interested in is maybe a $45 drop in filter.

the toilet paper that comes on most CAI isen't fit to wipe my ass, i have no idea how they can say that filters as well as a stock paper filter for filtration....damn marketing gimmicks

If you want to spueeze out some ponnies. I would suggest a $45 K&N replacement filter, a magnaflow exhaust, and a programmer.

 

Now, don't waste your money on a cat back exhaust system. Just find a shop that has magnaflow and have them do the install. I spent $300 and the shop custom fabed the exhaust pipe for my truck. You will save about $200 if you do some shopping.

 

As far as saying that the intakes are crap, I reall don't know, it would seem everyone else is set on that they are not worth it. So I would listen to them, majority rules! B

 

But I do know that the stock paper filter is crap. And the K&N factory replacement filters flow far more air and as long as you clean and oil them well you will be ok. I clean my filter on a Fri. or Sat. night, after cleaning I shake it out and use an old hair dryer to dry it out some. Then I put it in front of a fan over night to finish drying. The next morning I spray the oil on and let it sit for about an hour to get sticky. Put it back in and go. That may be more than some do, but it works for me.

from my personal experince i have seeing improvement on performance with some aftermarket CAI,but not all some of the K&N do really do much make the engine sound better,but they are some out there that actually do work good and improve your horsepower but not by alot maybe 2-5hp they do advertise 7-12 hp but what they never say is what modifications the engines have when they tested ,few of the guys here at my shop have install CAI on there truck,,and have taken them to a dyno shop around the corner from us and they did increase the hp the most increase i seen has been 9hp-and 12hp with the pcm tune and headers-but that was on a 2001 f-150 lighting..and is the only ford in the shop,,.it was a volant CAI, it was the enclosed system. next month i will be intalling a catback,and a volant CAI with the diablo sport programmer i will let u know how it does on the dyno.
