2010 Sierra 1500 All Terrain

Hi folks,

I hate to start a thread like this but would like some input after a few hours of reading the last few days, please bear with me.

Looking at a new truck to add to the collection (no worries, I'm keeping my '06 LBZ), got a call from a local dealer who has a 2010 Sierra 1500 All Terrain he's pretty motivated to move it as he has three of the same 2010s in the same color, willing to take $9000 off MSRP (over the phone before even sitting down). Brings the $40,550 down to $31550. Obviously still have some talking to do on that number.

Here's my dilemma, I've never owned a GMT-900 platform truck, all my other trucks are/have been GMT-800s. I'll be headed out to look at the truck this evening.

Few questions:

- What to look for on a new 2010?

- Anything to shy away from?

- I was really hoping to grab a 6.2L, I loved my old 5.3L with the 4.10s and 4L60e, but I fear it might be a bit weak in the GMT-900 platform with the new 6spd and 3.08s. Doing the math with the first couple of low gears in the 6spd seem like it should be more like a 4spd with some 3.54s/3.73s but it still has me worried. Really it all comes down to holding out for the 6.2L or not, dealer also has one of those (2011, so no deals) I'll drive that as well.

Sounds like a sweet truck. Not 100% on that 3.08. I'd have to drive it, but that has a hel;l of an options for the price.

Get 'er done!

The options are a nice touch yes but it really comes down to the engine/trans combo first.

I don't need a truck that tows 10k+ pounds (got my LBZ for that) or a race car, but I want something that will be able to get up and go when needed and get decent mileage while doing so. I was able to get mid 18/19 mpgs with my old 5.3L and would like to see that in a new truck.

If you settle, you'll hate it. The 3.08's aren't enough gear in my book. I wasn't even happy with the 3.42's with the 6-speed so I ordered my truck.

Otherwise, looks like a nice truck. Just not enough gear.

It'll probably feel underpowered and to soft a ride anyway as I like my DMax too much, but I won't be the one driving it everyday

Seems to be the consensus the more I read on it. I'll probably still go look/drive it and see.

Edit: I'd love to hear other opinions and see if there is anything to look out for.

I just got my 2011 All Terrain a couple of weeks ago. I havent towed anything with it yet, been tempted to hook up the boat and go around the block... but then Id have to clean the boat with all the snow/sand/salt on the roads. Spring cant get here soon enough.

So far my only complaint is the aux. input for the ipod, why couldnt they hide that in the center console? Still learning new things about it (ie the parking break, I put it on and couldnt find the release!!! couldnt believe I had to read the owners manual to figure it out) but Im loving everything else about it. Gas mileage is looking to be the same as the 2008 4.8L I traded in for it.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

What do you have for gears? 3.08/3.42/3.73s?

How is the mileage? I never owned a 4.8L.

It has the 3.42 in it, I believe that is standard with the AT package. Gas mileage so far is 15.6L/100km, not sure what that works out too in MPG. I think that might be a little low as the weather has been cold and snowing. Lots of stop and go traffic, slippery conditions and 4W Auto on.

That's about ~15mpg.

All the AT's I've looked at have the 3.08s. I did find one with 3.42s but it doesn't have some of the options I wanted.

arent all all terrains 3.42's

i just built one on gmc.com and 3.08 wasnt an option

correct me if im wrong please

I just played with the configurator on gm.ca, and I can build an All-Terrain with 3.08.

interesting, I just looked online and when building a 2010 4X4 it only gives the options for 3.42 or 3.73 gearing.

I have an 09 with 6 speed and 3.42 powered by a 5.3L and I'm satisfied with it, don't know so much about 3.08

I own and love a 2010 Silverado CC/SC with the 5.3 - 3.42 linked to the wonderful 6-speed tranny. The combination has wonderful power and it is smooooth. And it tows our 6,000 pound trailer like it wasn't there ... plus, it's great off-road.

I test-drove the same combination in 3.08 and it limped like a cripple. Prolly give a little better fuel economy, but it would absolutely be at the cost of utility. At that point, who cares?

That kinda makes you wonder why you see so many 3.08s on the lot. Is it stupid buying or just left-overs that nobody wanted.

Anyway, my advice is that the 5.3 is fine, but you DO WANT the 3,42 rear end.
