Oil Consumption Issues

Forgive me for asking this if it has been asked already. This is my first post and I have some major concerns with the amount of oil my 2007 Silverado is using. My truck is using one quart of oil for every 2000 miles. The truck has the 5.3 motor and it has 43,000 mile on it. Can someone help me out with what I should do? The local GM dealer says this is acceptable but it is not for me. GM said all they can do is have the local dealer do a oil consumption watch but otherwise do nothing. What?????

 

I also have a 2008 full ton chevy work van with 95,000 and I go 6000 to 8000 mile per oil change with no use of oil. Of corse it has a 4.8 motor instead of 5.3 but still don't use oil.

 

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Whats your point music? I've been to the dealer and they wont do anything for me. The 5year 100,000 warranty runs out in mid 2012 and I'll be stuck with an oil burning truck! So please explain yourself if I'm missing your point.

Let them do the oil consumption test/watch and go from there.

Mostly, my point was to help (we can't help much, but a GM dealer can). I didn't mean to sound direct... just a quick post. That said, you need to have the oil consumption formally documented by the dealer. They have an "acceptable use" amount that they go by, and it needs to be measured. Oil consumption can go south quick if there's a progressive issue (failing), or may stay unchanged (tolerance from factory).

 

It probably doesn't matter, but what oil are you using?

I have the truck serviced at this dealership. I'm not sure what their using but I think I'm going to change it myself this weekend and then let the start their test. Then again they'll probably want to put their oil in before they do the test...

 

Any sugestions on oil? I've been adding Valvoline 5W30 when needed.

I wouldn't bother changing the oil. You are better off since the dealer has been changing it and they have records of it being done. Just go to the dealer with it being low on oil.

I would not consider 1 qt per 2000 miles excessive. Think of it as bestowing a bit of tlc on your Chevy. You are also replenishing additives.

 

I would use a thicker oil. Thinner oils are for mileage. In Summer, try 15w 50 or 20 50. These work well and usually stay in the crankcase more.

NadieLite... your truck is just like my 2007 I just have nurf bars and a bed cover...

 

Ken... I can kinda see what your saying with the tlc... But don't you think it causes sensor problems? As for the oil siggestions what you suggest for the winter oil type?

 

I appreciate all the responses... I relize this subject has been covered several times, but when MY questions get answered I feel a little better... Otherwise all my time is consumed with Wheel Horse tractors...

For the warrenty, he needs to stay with 5w30.

I wouldn't consider it excessive on a 1976 Cheyenne. But I do on a new truck. Doubly so when the engineers at GM designed the engines to go 6,000 miles and up (depending on usage) on a single oil change...And built the Oil Life Monitor to remind you when to change it. I haven't had to keep a couple of extra quarts of oil in a truck since the 80's. But I bought 3 and dropped them in the back the other day. And like Mark said, for warranty purposes, he's got to put 5w30 in there.

Thanks Wingnut... Thats what I was saying myself. Its complete bull crap GM is getting away with this problem... You think the EPA likes this type of issue? As for the oil I'll stick to the recomended just in case.
