Looked at a 2001 2500HD 8.1. Few questions for ya'll, first off, did that one come with an allison? Secondly what gas milage am I lookin at? Thrid, its only 2wd extended cab 8 foot bed for 6900 obo(ima try for 6500), does that sound about right for the price? All input would be nice.

Yes, alot of them came with the Allison trans. Some will have the 4L80e I believe too. Mileage is pretty fair for some. 12-16mpg from what I've read.

I joined the air force 2 years ago and had to sell the 06 a year ago cause i used to work at GM so i could afford it then. Now im looking for a NEW HD (and by new i mean any truck besides my current ride which is sad to say a cobalt). Some people think the military makes tons of money...not so much sad to say...

The price seems fair, based on the truck condition. Especially if it does have the Allison. I don't know about the mileage, but I'm sure it being 2wd will help. My 2500HD w/ 6.0 and 4.10 gears gets like 12-14. I thought I read that the 8.1 will be a couple miles worse than mine unloaded, but will get better then I do when loaded. But not sure because I haven't owned the 8.1, just test drove it.

depending on the condition 6500 is a fair price.... sounds like a pretty cool truck..

i know the 8.1's are kindof a hit and miss with oil consumption....id make sure its not using too mcuh oil

A 2001 2500HD with an 8.1L had to have the Allison, as GM didn't have any other transmission available (yet) that could handle the big block or the Duramax. It wasn't until 2002 (at least) that the 4L85-E became available, making the Allison an option. My last truck was an '01 2500HD LS CCSB 8.1/Allison...still miss that rig. Got almost the same mileage as my current '03 1500HD! The '01-02 Allison pumps are a little loud; don't worry if it makes a little whining sound all the time.

That's not a bad price for a very strong truck.

your in the wrong branch man...go become a jarhead or slap on some ranger pantys and go deploy, then you will rake in the cash

naa, i deploy enough trust me...

and on the oil consumption, he said it does eat some oil. when i test drove it today the low oil light was on. any reason why it does that though?

The trucks are designed with short-skirt pistons that will use oil. I think up to 1qt per 1,000 mi is considered "normal", IIRC. But the low oil light doesn't come on until it's pretty low...more than a quart low. I would be concerned if the guy doesn't keep 'er topped off.
