He blew the engine or something. Even 500 hp vehicles can't catch the wheels on fire that fast. They'll pop generally before they catch fire.

there is something wrong with this story. i was bored one night and watching mythbusters and they couldn't get tires to light on fire. they did every thing from shoot sparks on them to soaking it with gas.

 

maybe the reports were sniffing a bit too much burnt rubber.
