New Truck, New Front End Clunk

Recommended Posts

Posted

Well with a foot or so of packed snow in the last day and no plows in the area, the roads around our shop have have 6 inch dips.

Driving even at 3 to 5 mph the truck was bobbing up and down quite a bit and making a clunking noise like a shock was loose...

Not nice for a truck that is only a week old, made an appointment and off to the service department on Friday. Hope for the best

and they will have an answer and a fix.

My 3 month old truck started to sound like it has a blown shock in the right front for the last week. I haven't had a chance to look yet. Let me know hwta you find...

They say they couldn't find anything, but they had it for awhile and it hasn't done it again.... hummm

I plan to schedule an appt with my dealer soon so they can address what I think are the same symptoms you are describing. My truck is a 2010 with less than 10k miles. I'm going to ask the dealer to inspect according to the cab mount insulators TSB 06-08-61-003E since the description of that TSB matches exactly what I'm experiencing.

I recommend you search on that bulletin # to see if that might be what you have going on.

Check the brake pedal. It shouldn't move side to side. If it does, the brake pedal bushing may be bad. The bolt that mounts the pedal at the firewall goes through this bushing. I was told that the pedal should be tight. I have had a clunk in my front end for years that nobody can figure out and I figured it out last week. I held my foot under the brake pedal when hitting the speed bumps or jarring road surfaces and the clunk went away. I now know the problem is in the brake pedal.

Thanks for posting that....after numerous intermediate shafts I have finally found the source of the noise in my truck. I will be replacing that brake pedal bushing soon!

part number 15157907 and a whopping $1.50 or less. I found one location that says it costs $.51, but then I'd have to pay for shipping and all. The local dealer said he can get me one for $1.31. I'm not gonna gripe over that price. The hard part will be getting the pedal disconnected. Rattle free is almost here!

I got mine yesterday and will be installing it tomorrow. My nephew works at a local GMC dealer and got mine for 51 cents. I'll get back to you after I verify that the noise is gone and forgotten.

I replaced mine today. It was a pain to get out and when I looked at it, it didn't look any different than the new bushing. It took about 45 minutes to get it out and 5 minutes to put it back in.

The sequence I used was to unplug the brake switch module from the pedal by removing the clip and disconnecting the pedal from the plunger. This allowed the pedal to swing all the way to the floor. I also had to unplug my trailer brake plug and another plug. This gave me the room I needed to get two sockets on both ends of the nut and bolt. I removed the pedal, popped out the old bushing, installed the new bushing, sprayed some white lithium grease inside it and reinstalled the pedal.

My truck feels like a new truck again with the brake pedal feeling tight and I had absolutely no rattle or clunking over any bumps. I read about a guy on another forum that paid to have this done and he paid $260. As far as I'm concerned, I saved myself $260 today and have a like new truck again!!!

Good luck with your repairs.

I finally got around to pulling my apart this evening but didn't have time to get it back in. The shoulder on the bushing was cracked up and came apart when I removed it. It was a little more trouble than I expected. I will post again after I get it back in the truck tomorrow.

Well I did get the brake pedal back in the truck yesterday and the wobbling pedal is no more. So far all is good. For those of you wondering exactly what was replaced I've attached a couple of pics that may help.2012-10-09154846.jpg2012-10-15121343.jpg
