Negatives To Doing 4-way Headlight Mod

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced any negative results from doing the 4-way (or 5-way, or 6-way) headlight mods. Anything like overheating wires, short circuiting, anything at all.

Ide love to do the mod. I love the way my wife's 09 Tahoe lights up the road, and I would love to make my 05 that bright. But, not if Im gonna be running the risk or burning anything up. Especially the entire truck. I know that sounds extreme, but I dont want to hurt my truck in any way.

Only when they're done wrong. us ethis kit from summit. http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keywor...30822&dds=1. For $60 its worth not having your wiring burn up and it goes in pretty easy. I discussed this a few threads ago around an hour back. I post these kits beacuse I had a BAD experiance.

Really? Explain.

Well i was 18 and knew it all  so i bought a relay and some wire and went to town on my 94 silverado. Got the lights on and took off to screw around made it about 6 miles from home when all kinds of lights came on in my dash and smoke rolled up from under the wipers :( . It didn't burn up all the way thank God i had a bottle of pop but it did almost 3000 in damage. The splices shorted out and with no fuse they caught on fire about 3 inches from the underhood fuse/ relay panel and I think it was the ABS controller. Two degrees and 15 years of growing up I figured out what not to do. and that would be Let someone else figure out all the technical issues and I'll Buy the finshed parts.

Yeah, please explain, I did the diode trick on my friends 05 for his fogs and lows two years ago and they're still fine as is my 01 with grounding trick.

Yeah all those are fine but if you read my post I said that only when they're done wrong. If you don't know what you are doing bad shit WILL happen. Thats all I was saying he asked the about problem and this kit eliminates any guess work and the directions are good enough you don't need alot of experiance.Just tring to help not argue or start a bullshit debate like the whole ford eco boost thread going on.

But, that doesn't really relate to the whole diode trick...that's just poor wiring skills and you should ALWAYS use a fuse when you run a new power wire. The diode trick is pretty safe as it only runs a couple milliamps through the diodes just enough to activate another relay or two. Plus it's been done over and over and nobody has ever had a problem. And don't even think of pulling the ford argument crap on me, I'm just stating facts, not arguing.

I totally agree. You must have some experiance with stuff like this Myself i have 8 years of college pertaining to the electrical field. I was just showing how easy and safe it can be, not to degrade the other ways of doing it. And it is a 10 dollar relay and some wire but unless you know what your doing the extra 40 can be worth it.It blows my mind how fast people are to jump and tear apart someones reply. But its a free country so enjoy

Well as long as you agree, I have no reason to tear apart your reply. :(

Ty, Just do the diode trick. I ran it on my 07 classic from the day I bought it with NO problems. I only did the high and low beams, didn't touch fogs or drl's. Traded truck in and left everything installed. You'll like the difference....... Joe

Oh and since we're yelling at each other where did you get the lower half of you bumper i really like that. :(

I don't understand what piece you're talking about. Everything on the front with the exception of the corner lights is stock. I just had all the plastic color-matched.

Thats really all I want to do. I may add the Fog lights just to light up the ditches a little more to watch for deer, but I figure the DRLs dont put off much light.

From what I gather, the diode trick is just triggering the relay for the low beams with the low amp power that is triggering the relay for the high beams right. There shouldnt be any danger of overloading anything right?

Now all I need to know is what does "Peak Inverse Voltage" mean. I have 3 different types of diodes. They are rated at 50v, 200v, and 400v Peak Inverse Voltage. They are all rated at 1A as well. I would assume that since the truck is a 12v system, any of them would work right?

Sorry for so many questions. I know a pretty good bit about electricity, and can wire up most any household situation you throw at me. But, i dont know jack about electronics. Just enought to do some minor stereo installation.

I did the diodes mod and have low/high/fogs all come on at once when I hit the high beams. What a huge difference this made obviously. I did the mod in '05 and it's been working like a champ ever since. No problems with it so far.
