hey can any of you custom fabricators out there point me in the right direction on pipe benders? i dont need/ cant afford top of the line. I just want to use it to make roll cages, tube bumpers etc. just curious as to what some of you use. i see those ones in harbor freight for 100 - 200 bucks, but i was told that they are used more for exhaust tubing and not actually mild steel pipe.

thanks

Here's one I've used before, the Model 4 that's hydraulic. There's also the Model 3 that can be used by hand, or you can purchase a hydraulic attachment for ease of use. I thought it was put together really well and bent chrome-moly with ease. The best part is that it's made in the USA! That's what I would use, just depends on exactly how much you want to spend and how much you'll use it.

Sorry for the double post....

Air over hydro will be cheapest...itjust plugs into your compressor and the air moves the hydraulic piston.

The one they use on Extream 4X4 is an air-over-hydro unit.

If you need it for your self...it may be a little on the pricey side though...

My buddy has this exact bender in his shop...he got it slightly used though....at auction. But he makes cages and bumpers with it.

If your patient, or can afford to be, deals like that come along.

If you are going to use it for roll cages, you DO NOT want a pipe bender, you want a tubing bender. They are not the same thing.

A pipe bender is made/sized for pipe, and a tubing bender is made/sized for tubing like you use in a real roll cage.

Pipe for a roll cage is not a good idea by the way.

You say you can't afford top of the line...how much is your life worth ?

This is what I have, but I have converted it to full hydraulic, and have built a custom stand for it.

well some of the tubing benders i looked at were 4000 bucks and up. way too much for me. especially since it will only be used for me fabricating rock sliders, tube bumpers, roll bars for the bed of the truck, stuff like that. maybe my buddies would want something built for them, but idk.

but if it came down to costing 4k or more, i would just pass on that idea and purchase my bumpers and etc. but that link you posted seemed like a good price. i have no problem spending 1000 bucks on a bender, its just when u get up around 4k, i have much better stuff to spend my money on lol.

thanks for info, i knew there was a difference between pipe and tube benders, i just wanted to make sure which was which, that way i didnt buy a cheapo one for 150 bucks and wonder why its not bending my steel

I've got about 900-1000 in mine, with the bender, ram, stand, and hydraulic pump. I made mine with a 12v hydraulic pump from a liftgate. That way I can use it anywhere, 110V or not.

If you are serious about this, I highly recommend you buy the bend tech pro software. It lets you design your cage or whatever in 3d, then it tells you where to bend, and how much material you will need. It is ~ 300 or so bucks.

that software looks pretty cool, i look at it like this, if im going to spend 500 bucks or so on a set of N-fab nerfs, i might as well buy a tool for double that and make my own. cause i know im going to want a set for the next truck i buy.

my grand father always said, if you have to borrow a tool twice, you might as well have bought it.

That was exactly part of my reasoning, but I still bought the bars....... :dunno:

    • It is a company truck. Not under warranty. Both companies I’m involved with usually buy trucks that are discounted when looking. Except what the owners drive. Being retired and minority owner. I don’t drive a company truck. If they have the new GM gas engine it would be in a service truck.
    • Update!   Had the dealer look at the issue. First tech says no problem?? I said there was no voltage on the brake terminal on the 7 pin connector! He said he did not know what pin I was talking about. So they bring out a seasoned tech and I explain to him. He attaches a VOM and has me push the brake, and sees no voltage!!    Tom, the seasoned guy says lets go back to my service bay and look closer. We discover thru his on line system that the controller is a "smart controller" as it needs to detect a trailer connected before the brake voltage is allowed to the 7 pin connector!!! He also showed me a GM bulletin stating some trailers with LED lights have such low resistance the controller wont recognize them!!! I was thinking WTF, but thanked him for bringing me back into the service bay and explaining this all to me. He also plugged in a trailer simulator and it showed the brake controller was indeed working.   After my dealership visit I hooked up to an older camper with standard 1157 lights and the truck did connect and the electric brakes worked great!    Not to sure what I have to do with the equipment trailer with LED lights, I cant tow it with no brakes.   Why did something so simple for many years have to get so complicated!
    • Do find out as that would be interesting if they have been using any L8T engines or for that matter have been running any of the Ford gas 7.3 to see how they have been panning out.    I assume your nephews engine replacement was on his dime as the regular warranty would have long past unless he had some form of extended warranty that covered such events. That shows though and may depend on the year of the build that failures are occurring with the valve train well beyond the warranty distance and more than likely so will others have that sneak up on them.
    • I realize this is an old post and its probably been talked about since then on this forum and I may have mentioned it myself but the Chev multi flex tailgate on the HD trucks are all aluminum so there is that one item that I am aware of on a current GM HD truck that is aluminum but if its the standard tailgate then its still a steel unit as far as I am aware to current 2026 model year.
    • I am surprised it didn't pop back up some just in time for the end of school/summer holidays and July 4th time period. Here in Alberta it hit its low coming off the high back a week before the end of June or so and has been creeping back up some and would equate roughly to around 20 cents per gallon increase. Of course there are various factors and one is the games they typically play with wanting to capture that holiday vehicle movement but also our government directly causing our Canadian dollar to drop ( a polite way of explaining the real picture ) causing our prices to go up rather than continue down like it should have, and even though we are sitting on the crude.
