How many miles go you guys go on an air filter? I tend to chance at 30K but thinking it may be to soon since it still looks good. Also what brand do you go with? I just want a paper replacement. Not looking for K&N or anything.

I am a little obsessive over air filters, I change them every year, I put an amsoil ae in my truck right away. With paper they say you can get 50,000 miles but if you drive either on dirt a lot or in bumper to bumper traffic than it is going to be less. You should look into the amsoil ae they are cleanable and guaranteed for 4years 100,000 if you clean them.

Other than that if you just want a paper I would say buy a wix.

Checked out the AE. Looks pretty good. I dont want anything that gets oiled. And from the looks of it you just have to vacuum it and blow it off once a year.

There is no oil involved, I really do not like those oiled filers either. Tons of the guys here have the amsoil in their trucks.

While I realize that different brands of filters vary by vehicle application, I remember reading a filter study a few years ago from a Duramax forum. Members of the forum arranged for Testand Corp. in Rhode Island to perform air filter performance tests for filters for the Duramax diesel engine application. Testand performed the SAE J726/ISO 5011 air filter test on a variety of filters and came to the conclusion that while the AC Delco filter was the most restrictive (but the amount of airflow was negligible) it was BEST at keeping the bad stuff out of the engine.

Here's a link to the test results.

I think when the time comes I will go with AC Delco.

Why do you guys wait so long to change your air filter? How much are they for the newer trucks? I have a 1990 with an edelbrock open element, I change it whenever it looks dirty. Filters are only about $6.

Changed mine out at 80,000km because I had one I got for free (from NAPA) factory one was still very clean.

Yeah, they're a bit more than 6 bucks for these trucks....but not much more...I think I pay 15 for a stock replacement and 40 if I get a K&N.

These filters are closed element for the most part and suck air from the fender, so they don't really get dirty for a long time.

I'd say your fine for 50K...but I like to inspect and clean mine once a year or so. Even with the K&N I took it out once a year and vacuumed it off or hit it with a little compressed air in reverse. Clean and oil it once every 50K miles...I haven't done one yet though....never had a vehicle longer than 50K miles...LOL

I just checked mine at 80,000kms... and it looks brand new. Also, I have the "indicator/meter" thingy on the side of the airbox that says its still like 80%-ish. How accurate are those things??

If you want a real nice filter, I recommend the purolator pureone which is a little expensive but great. It is very nicely made with a one side oiled element for extra dirt catching. Or you can get the light duty wix/napa gold filter (the same filter) which is nice because it is made with a synthetic media called Phenolic which does a really good job of stopping and holding dirt while not restricting flow too much. It is also much more durable than regular paper. In the link that vroten posted above, the wix did pretty well. Purolator pureone and wix/napa gold also make excellent oil filters too! Just my 2 cents but Wix and Purolator are the best normal priced, commonly available, filters on the market.
