Hi there folks, 17 years of age here. Driving a 1990 gmc sierra, stepside, 305, 4x4, 5 spd manual. I am having clutch problems with it, there is nothing there. i can push the pedal down with one finger theres no pressure. so tommorow i start going to take it out, im going through the transmission. So being that this is my first time taking a transmission out im looking for all the advice i cant get. and if i could a step by step guide?

Buy a service manual. Haynes or Chiltons etc.... Available at many parts stores

Yeah. Although a service manual is spendy...A Haynes or Chilten will probably do you just fine for a clutch job. They're pretty straightforward.

Are you sure that it isn't the clutch master or slave cylinders that are at fault? Both are external on that truck and can be diagnosed/replaced without transmission removal.

lack of pressure sounds more like the hydraulics, which is way easier to do.

does the fork push the slave cylinder rod back inside the cylinder? as right now it is fully extended, and i can push it back in with my hand. also, when i bought the truck, i would let of the cluthc and neutral and my throwout bearing would make noise and my truck would rock back and forth and whatnot. Anything i can do to diagnose whether its hydraulic or clutch? i was going to bleed both my cylinders, but i dont know how exactly, any advice is much appreciated here guys.

It's been a while since I worked a stick on a GM, but the slave cylinder should have a bleed screw on it, pump the cluth and hold the pedal down, then bleed it out. If you do not have pressure in two or three attempts, its bad. Also, check the master that feeds it after two bleeds, so you do not run the master dry. For some reason, I want to say there should be a spring at the slave that pulls the clutch arm/rod back into the cylinder. Without having one for reference or a book to look at, I cannot provide any more details... Sorry.

I would get a General Motors service manual. I want every detail explained, though thats just me.
